Georges Fho Madison
I was immediately convinced of the power of Georges Fho Madison's painting from the appearance of his first “Letters to the Oppressed” in 1985. I was impressed by the energy and the freedom of this artist who experimented with colors and materials in all their forms. I was struck by the audacity of this painter who dared to confront his painting with wide open spaces. "The color does not scare me" he dared to declare. No provocation, only a program to which the artist has been following for more than thirty years of career.
Around the years 1994-1995, Georges began a new series that he called his
“Mixtures of colors” . I wondered in front of these canvases which systematically sought to bring together in the same composition two universes a priori very distant from each other. This daring to manipulate colors was not only there to impress or to amaze the gallery. Georges was telling a personal story: how to bring together two colorful universes to make them dialogue with each other? how to do work when one comes from two cultures (Cameroonian by birth and Western by training)? Behind the bursts of color hid a more secret, more painful, more intimate human adventure.
In the years that followed, Georges constantly questioned painting and the world around him. The confrontation between two colored universes is always present but the painter intends to explore more complex relationships. In the continuity of the colored universes already explored, the “Rain paintings” which appeared around 2012 immerse the viewer in an unstable, uncertain and floating universe. The rains of color that cover all the canvases are invitations to cleanse our gaze of its certainties. For thirty years, the demanding painting of Georges Fho Madison has accompanied me and helps me to take a renewed and re-enchanted look at the beauties of the world today.
