Emma Lapassouze is a contemporary French artist whose work encompasses a diverse range of mediums, including pictorial creations, sculpted assemblages, and installations. Her artistic practice is deeply rooted in an exploration of matter and materials, reflecting an early fascination with textures and the tactile experience of working with sand, earth, wood, and paint.
Her influences are both broad and personal, shaped by university research, encounters, and travels. A significant early inspiration was the work of Catalan artist Antoni Tàpies and his “Materistic” paintings. Additionally, the work of Franco-Chinese artist Zao Wou-Ki played a crucial role in shaping her pictorial universe.
Lapassouze initially navigated between the artistic trends of "Materialism" and Lyrical Abstraction, eventually extending her focus beyond the confines of the frame to bring matter into new contexts. Her current work explores themes of human connection and our relationship with the living world, examining both interior and exterior spaces.
She creates spaces of connection using unconventional materials such as coffee grounds, incorporating body impressions into her paintings, sculpting dead wood, and combining shards of glass, stones, and plaster. Through these elements, she aims to infuse energy into what might otherwise seem inert, addressing concerns about the erasure of subject and environment and reflecting on humanity's place in the natural world amidst existential questions.
