Emilie Mota-Maldonado is a contemporary French artist. In her work, distorted bodies frequently appear. Their expressiveness is enhanced by the distortion, which increases the emotional impact. Their attitudes are similar to those of animals, whether they are wild or sensitive. In addition, they are more than just men and women; they are "beings". Her work "contains" these individuals, whether they are suffering or enjoying themselves, like a caged animality.
Her intention is to connect with our "animal being," our instinct and emotions. She removes the environment of her subjects by a deep black matte background. This background also allows a better highlighting of the subject.
Emilie Mota-Maldonado paints the bodies like she is modeling them. The light settles on the bodies as it would on a material in volume. This gives the works a more "sculptural" effect than "painted", and this illusion of matter reinforces their raw aspect.
