Denis Huneau’s work is imbued with poetry. The poetry of everyday life, the poetry that comes from people, from animals, from cats, chicken, rabbits, from clouds, from colours, and from his own imagination.
There is nothing affected about his expression mixing the swell of watercolours with the fine line of pen and ink.
Straightforward, authentic images showing true humanism. And that is precisely where all their modernity lies.

THE INTIMATE PORTRAITS OF DENIS HUNEAU
We liked his little characters last year at the exhibition at La Godeline. Now Denis Huneau has tightened the frame moving from silhouettes to portraits. At the same time he has increased the format, without losing any of the force of the line and the spontaneity of the execution.
Denis Huneau is a humanist, he likes people; and it the profound humanity of these imaginary portraits which first strikes you. He works on feeling, trusting improvisation, just as a jazz performer goes headlong into a riff. “When I start off, I never know where I’m going to end up”, he says. He is an artist with experience and a solid foundation from the Art School in Angers allowing him to put his faith in his talent.
While returning to the finesse of his drawing style, a style which is “modern”, contemporary, explosive, and yet precise, his portraits also use watercolour: splashes of colour applied with a brush underpin a facial expression or the way a piece of clothing falls. Faces which above all have a look in their eye, an eye with little inner light glowing deep within it. That is what makes them immediately attaching and familiar; these characters are telling you a story, and you want to get to know them better.
