Johnny E.S.J. Otilano
I'm a self-taught artist born in the Philippines, a country rich in culture and history. I graduated from Feati University with a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, major in Advertising Design. In 1989, I made my first trip to the U.S. at the invitation of the Philippine Arts Festival in Los Angeles.
I was fortunate to be recognized after my painting "Market Place" won Second Place and received the highest winning bid in an art contest sponsored by KVPT Channel 18 for their 20th Great Annual Art Auction in 1997. Recently, one of my paintings, entitled “November 25, 1994,” received the People’s Choice Award at the Pink Show 2010 and in 2011 my paintings "Autumn Leaves" received the Most Inspiring Entry Award & Peoples Choice Award and in 2013 my paintings "My Old Guitar" received The Peoples Choice Award & Margaret Hudson's Choice Award.
I received a Certificate of Recognition from the Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, District Assembly Adrin Nazarian and a Certificate of Achievement given by the Philippine Institute of Language, Arts and Culture during the Asian Pacific Heritage Month 2017. I'm also given an award by ArtTour International Magazine as one of the Top 60 Masters of Contemporary Arts 2019 that was held in New York Museum of Arts & Design on April 27th, 2019.
I have been known for my portrait commissions and landscape paintings. I dreamed about becoming a soldier as a kid to help defend my country, but my interest changed when I started to dabble with art using the four walls of our home. With my artistic blood awakened, I then channeled my energy and passion for my country through arts with a paintbrush filled with bold, striking colors.
My own style was developed with influences of masters and recent artists. The distinctive personal style and technique that I have incorporated in my pieces are spreading paint on raw plywood, and gluing and nailing found objects like soda can pull tabs, old keys, metal chains and gun shells.
If I gained recognition, it was for the ability to conjure great emotions and portray a story behind each of my creations. As a established international artist living in Central California, I still carry that passion with dozens of artwork pieces conveying my style and insignia.
I've exhibited in many galleries here in the U.S. and museums abroad. In addition to the visual art, I compose and write music that relate to my paintings and that are performed at my shows.
It is my belief, as an artist and as a human, that we all exist here for a purpose. As an Artist, you have to explore a lot and experiment, and as time goes by you uncover your own self and discover where you stand. No matter what other people say: continue what you're doing, believe in yourself and be passionate in your art. Your art and what you express and everything that comes out of it is your soul, a God-given talent, a God-given soul.

Since the beginning of time people fight and kill each other because of greed and power. Whoever the strongest win, whoever the powerful get what they want. Country invades country and only weak people and innocent children suffered and get killed.

Johnny Otilano: A Filipino Painter Colors the Pink Show by Noks Sosa
The Pink Show is an annual art exhibit in Fresno, California, USA in celebration of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Why is it called the Pink Show? This was founded by Mary Lozano and Cynthia Chapman Manuszak. Mary is a cancer patient and Cynthia is a photographer, when Cynthia took photos of Mary with other cancer survivors and have an art show. They raised money for breast cancer patient. And then they called it, the Pink Show.
Today, Pink Show is being participated by different artists in Freso, CA. The art must contain pink somewhere on the artwork and must also related to breast cancer.
A Filipino artist is participating the show. Johnny Otilano, a Filipino painter based in United States of America. He won the People's Choice Award last 2010 with his artwork entitled 11/25/1994 signifying the death of her mother. The artwork was very symbolic and meaningful. He put photos of his mother, his wife and his daughter on it. For me, it simply represents the women fighting for wellness and dignity.
J. Ontilano entry at The Pink Show 2011.
This year's Pink Show, Johnny is joining again the art exhibit with his new artwork "The Autumn Leaves." Let us support him and his artwork. Sa paraang ito, hindi lang tayo sumusuporta sa isang Pilipinong pintor ngunit nagpapakita rin ito ng ating pagsuporta sa mga kababaihan.
The Pink Show 2011 will be starting in October 6 at the Chris Sorensen Art Studio and Gallery 2223 S. Van Ness Avenue Fresno, CA. 93721 from 5 pm to 9 pm.There will be a Chris Sorensen Choice Award and a People PINK Choice Award that will be selected by viewers that will attend the gallery.

JOHNNY OTILANO: A FILIPINO PAINTER GAINING RECOGNITION IN THE US by: Robert P. DeTagle,
The child Johnny dreamed of becoming a soldier to help defend his country the Philippines, but his interest changed when he started to dabble with art using the four walls of his home.
With his artistic blood awakened, he channeled his energy and passion for his country through art with a paintbrush and bold, striking colors. Now, the self-taught artist Johnny Otilano has gained a lot of recognition for his ability to summon great emotions and portray a story behind each creation.
An established international artist living in Fresno, California, Johnny still carries that zeal with dozens of works that carry his distinct style and emblem. In addition to visual art, he writes music that relate to his paintings and that are performed at his shows. He is particularly noted for his stirring use of mixed materials, juxtaposing paint with ‘non-art’ pieces to bring immediacy and impact to the finished work.
Last year, at the Pink Show 2010 held at The Cris Sorensen Studio and Art Gallery, Otilano won the People’s Choice Award with his painting entitled “November 25, 1994.“
The Pink Show is an annual art exhibit in Fresno in celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It was founded by Mary Lozano and Cynthia Chapman Manuszak. Cynthia is a photographer who took photos of Mary and other cancer survivors; together they exhibited those photos at the show that was set up to raise money for breast cancer patients.
The painting “November 25, 1994” portrays the death of his mother from breast cancer. In it, Otilano put photos of his mother, as well as of his wife Linda — who is a uterine cancer survivor — and of his daughter on it. It quite simply and starkly symbolizes women fighting for wellness and dignity.
Today, different artists in Fresno, CA participate in the Pink Show; the essential component of their art submission is that it contain pink somewhere on the artwork and be related to breast cancer.
At this year's Pink Show, Johnny won recognition again with his new piece entitled "The Autumn Leaves" not once but twice. On October 6, 2011 at the Sorensen Gallery he received “The Most Inspiring Entry” and “The People’s Choice” Awards with overwhelmingly.
“Autumn Leaves" refers to the song that he wrote after his mother’s death on November 25, 1994 as the US celebrated Thanksgiving Day. Johnny glued to the canvas the photograph of his Mother, stamps that he collected off his mother’s letters, and the Rosary that his mother gave him before coming to the US, then painted autumn colors around it and splashed it with pink paint dripping down the entire piece.
To learn more about Otilano’s art, visit , and check out his interview about the Pink Show at photo.php?v=263019877070804.
