Inspired by original oil painting on board 18 x 26 inches signed lower left J.W. Curtis and dated 1893.
James Waltham Curtis (1839-1901) was an eminent Australian colonial artist whose work lives on as a tribute to Australia’s early days of European settlement. His approach is of technical, poetic and historical interest, emphasizing man’s battle with a primeval landscape and nature, his picturesque landscapes being fine examples of the late 19th century period which preceded the Heidelberg School. Curtis was an English painter and illustrator who it is believed, came to Australia during the Gold Rush. Curtis’ work plays an important part in the preservation of Australian history and is an excellent reminder of how life was in the latter part of the 19th century.

In this painting I decided to create the play of light coming from the left hand side of the painting as at dawn. The small figure in the foreground shows the insignificance of humanity in the natural world.

The painting was painted using brush and palette knife for detail and more structured paint.

Christopher Vidal is a realist artist inspired by the style and techniques of the classical realist painters such as Caravaggio and Dutch painters as Rembrandt. He is also inspired by the American painters of the Hudson River School and the Australian impressionists of the Heidelberg Art Movement.
His works of art brings together classical realism from Europe and US as well as Australian impressionism.
With his work Chris finds a connection between his love for science, environment and arts. With his work he wants to show the beauty of nature and to re-establish the connection of humanity with nature.

Chris Vidal is an Australian contemporary realist artist who lives and works in Sydney, Australia. His interest in arts started from very young. At the age of 13 he attended and studied classical drawing at the School of Arts, Palazzo de LaSalle, Valletta, Malta.

His initial work was inspired by artists from the Renaissance and Baroque eras such as Caravaggio and Rembrandt.  Life took Chris in a different direction and he pursued a career as a medical scientist and researcher, working for government, universities and private institutions in Malta and Australia.

His interest in the art of painting remained alive along the years and although time was limited he was trying to find the opportunity to experiment with various media. His interest and curiosity in oil painting pushed him to buy a simple set of oil paints and a book to teach himself how to paint in oils. From that time onward he never looked back and the regular practice of the art improved his skills dramatically. After a number of years he was ready to take the decision to leave his life long career in science to become a professional artist. His current body of work consists of various representations of the Australian landscape inspired by places he visits. His style of work is influenced by the American landscape painters of the Hudson River School and Australian impressionists of the Heidelberg movement as well as master artists such as Rembrandt, John Singer Sargent and contemporary American and Australian artists. His works were published and featured in books and magazines such as The Australian Artist.

From his home studio in Sydney he produces a continuous stream of new works and commissioned paintings. His works are now found in private and corporate collections in Australia and Internationally.
