Catherine Villa
Catherine Villa is a contemporary French artist known for her distinctive approach to oil painting, reminiscent of watercolors, on canvases that are fully saturated. Her artistic process demands a perfect and skillful execution, emphasizing respect for the initial sketch. Villa's technique involves applying very thin layers in washing styles on soaked canvases. She employs rags to delicately wipe away overflowing colors, using very few brush strokes to maintain transparencies and enrich the material while simultaneously lightening it. Playing with dilutions, she carefully unveils the artwork, engaging in a process of revelation and concealment until the desired effect emerges from the ethereal mist of light.
In her paintings, dark values caress lights without overpowering them, and whites strive to retain their purity while colors shimmer alongside blacks that never reach a profound darkness. The result is a multi-layered work that invites the viewer's gaze to penetrate beyond the surface, creating a sense of depth in a third dimension that extends beyond the canvas.
Catherine Villa's artistic vision goes beyond the visual. She expresses a pursuit of the invisible through color vibrations and the simplification of shapes, creating a space for imagination and dream. In her works, she captures connected beings, traces of our passage through life, interwoven links between individuals or with their personal histories.
Villa believes in the existence of a hidden world within each of us, and she sees herself as an artist who unveils this concealed realm sporadically, akin to waves revealing rocks during low tide. Through her art, she gives birth to organic or human shapes that evoke emotions and, perhaps, serve as conduits to unearth buried memories.

"CHERCHEURS D'OR"

Parcours
The discovery of the works of Giacometti was fundamental and revealing for the artist, especially when this latter created « L’Homme qui Marche « (The Walking Man), a sculpture showing a being in motion whose body is stretched to the extreme and whose massive feet give the impression of holding the body back and nailing it to the floor (ground si dehors).
Paintings last and time stands still. When looking at these miraculously emerged beings, we also stand still. The image which appears in the light is of ourselves.
Where do we come from ? the artist seems to be asking. What roots do we have and what legacy can we leave ?
Close to people, Catherine literally integrates us to the work, she sends us back to our origins, to our condition, showing our fragility together with our hopes. Her characters are always the same as in real life, always in question, always waiting. They are the protagonists of their time (lives ? own life-stories ?).
The links that bind us to each other are questioned : « Il fallait qu’ils se séparent » (They had to separate ), « Il y avait si longtemps » (It’s been such a long time ), « Étreinte Immobile » (Immobile Hug)….. are just a few of the evocative titles which underline her work. The human being is a being in a relationship but what does he make of it ? It is a case of evoking the moments which mark our lives, moments of separation , moments of solitude or of discovery and exchange.
From a technical point of view, diluted oil is put on completely moistened linen canvas and glazes are superimposed. Then pigments are projected on . All this is carried out using hard brushes, sieves, combs with very few actual direct touches, the idea being yet again to get back to our roots. The artist experiments with ancestral techniques of parietal art.
This invisible art lurking in deep caves waited for the light from fire torches in order to be discovered and admired . Prehistoric Man worked his pigments with a buffer, a stencil or by blowing and he signed with a hand-print (negative hands).
Terracotta sculptures are in the same vein to find our roots within the clay and the great bond with the land. It is a means of expression by the hand which completes what paintings express but three dimensionally.
What is beautiful is what we do not see.

"Her paintings are as human beings. They develop in layers as overlapping stories. Each wash suggests the former. In places, the fractures appear to let the light or shadow through. "
Serge Deheuninck / "La voix du Nord". France 2009
"You present paintings where a kind of scale or metal structure is present. It can also symbolize the DNA chain, the relationship between man and his environment, the relationship between the infinitely large and the infinitely small, between the One and the All, light and shadow. We are transported to another dimension where cosmic thinking creates metaphysical relationship between painting and watcher... "
