Plastician Artist by vocation, issued from a cultivated family, gifted in the domain of art. She initiated her childhood by using pencil then watercolor up till trying oil-panting which had impressed her in her secondary studies at the 80’s. After having her bachelor in Mathematics, she joined the dental specialty, the discipline which didn’t lack artistic affinity and occurrence, sculpting necessitates more patience but he showed much more success, this has allowed her making many forms calling sculpting as an art. Nevertheless, her personal interest has tended particularly to painting. Her first expositions took place during her years of studies (1983-198..) many national and international artistic demonstrations took place successively as follow:
1984- an individual exposition at Batna University.
1986- an individual exposition at Constantine University.
1987- Dual Exposition with her sister (the engineer); Hafssa (miniaturist) at Constantine.
2001- 1st National Lounge of Plastic Arts in Batna, the theme of the exposition was “The Colours”.
2002- 7th National Lounge of Plastic Arts in Gulema.
2003- Algeria’s Year in France, Leila participated with 7 artists from Batna in……. Karim Meziani/ Nice. Nithael Gallery/ Lille & Lyon.
2004- Collective exposition “Colour of the east” at the Med Issiakhem’s Hall in Constantine. 2004- Lounge of Plastic Arts of the east at Mohamed Racim’s Gallery, Algiers.
2005- An Exposition at El-Aourassi Hotel, Algiers (World Woman Day).

Djamila Flici Guendil : « Féminin pictural »
Diplômée de l’Ecole Nationale d’Administration d’Alger, Djamila Flici Guendil a ensuite multiplié les expériences ministérielles : conseillère du Ministre du travail, de la protection sociale et de la formation professionnelle, puis auprès du Ministre de la culture. Elle a aussi présidé le Conseil d’administration de l’Office National des Droits d’Auteurs.
Djamila Flici Guendil a édité au mois de Mars, aux éditions « Casbah », un livre intitulé « Féminin pictural ». Cet ouvrage retrace le parcours de onze artistes algériennes dans différents contextes, récents et moins récents. Nous l'avons rencontré lors d'une vente dédicace à la librairie du tiers-monde, où elle a bien voulu répondre à nos questions...
Bonjour madame Guendil. Pouvez-vous vous présenter à nos lecteurs ?
Je suis auteure, j’ai déjà écrit un précédent ouvrage. Il s’agit de « Diwan El Fen : Dictionnaire des peintres, sculpteurs et designers algériens » qui a été, si l’on peut dire, le premier dictionnaire illustré sur les arts en Algérie. Dans ce premier ouvrage, j’avais recensé plus de 1700 plasticiens hommes et femmes bien sûr, dans les zones les plus reculées d’Algérie, et il y avait parmi eux beaucoup de jeunes talents. Ce deuxième ouvrage, « Féminin Pictural » s’inscrit donc dans la continuité du précédent mais là c’est vraiment une sélection d’artistes. Il s’agit de onze portraits de femmes artistes. Pourquoi onze ? C’est un pur hasard, c’est généralement des coups de cœur. Et puis bon, j’ai fait des choix comme ça sur des femmes peintres qui avaient beaucoup de talent. C’est souvent des coups de cœur ou bien des rencontres heureuses.
Comment l'idée de publier un tel ouvrage a-t-elle germé en vous ?
En dehors des deux décédées dans « Féminin Pictural », à savoir Aïcha Haddad et Baya, toutes les autres sont vivantes, il s’agit de Safia Zoulid, Leïla Ameddah, Meriem Aït El Hara, les jeunes de la nouvelle génération qui faisaient partie du groupe « Sebbaghine » et puis aussi Djamila Bent Mohamed. Vous remarquerez que j’ai prospecté à travers le territoire, elles ne sont pas toutes d’Alger : Leïla Ameddah habite Batna, Zahia Dahel est à Annaba, Latifa Boulfoul à Constantine, donc vous savez, c’est un florilège, j’ai voulu m’intéresser à des personnalités intéressantes, qui m’intriguaient un peu aussi, et puis au final ce n’est pas un dictionnaire. Ce sont des vies de femmes aussi. Pourquoi les femmes ? On m’a souvent posé cette question. Ce n’est pas une démarche féministe, mais disons qu’il y avait très peu d’ouvrages consacrés aux femmes. En dehors de quelques ouvrages généraux consacrés à Baya, c’était beaucoup plus un condensé d’articles, mais il n’y avait pas eu de livre sur les femmes. Je me disais qu’il y avait beaucoup de talents mais pour les femmes, ça a toujours été plus difficile. Il n’y pas très longtemps encore, elles étaient cloitrées, elles ne faisaient pas d’études, pas d’école d’art. Il y a des gens comme Souhila Belbahar, qui est autodidacte, qui ont du lutter pour s’imposer comme peintre. Elle vient d’un milieu assez conservateur, elle est de Blida donc c’était très difficile pour elle d'exposer. Elle disait que c’était une bataille rangée pour arriver à faire accepter ça à un entourage qui n’en voyait pas l’utilité. L’avènement de la femme à l’art est, chez nous, une chose très récente, il date d’il y a quelques années. Aujourd'hui, on voit que les jeunes ont de meilleures conditions, ils pensent que tout est facile, mais il y a une génération de cela, c’était tout autre, c’était différent, inimaginable. C’étaient les premières comme Djamila Bent Mohamed qui avait quand même fait l’école des beaux-arts en 1954, elle a lutté, c’était un parcours semé d’embuches. C’est pour toutes ces raisons que j’ai voulu mettre ça en valeur. En même temps il y avait des profils intéressants, des personnalités qui m’interpelaient comme ça.
Laquelle des deux étapes a été pour vous la plus laborieuse, le travail de recherche ou le processus rédactionnel ?
On ne peut pas faire une œuvre sur des peintres sans recherche, il n y a pas que des portraits sur des femmes peintres, il y a aussi une introduction où je relate toute l’évolution de la femme dans l’art, aussi bien dans le monde, en Europe, ensuite dans le monde arabe pour aboutir chez nous au Maghreb et en Algérie. Pour tout cela, il a fallu chercher, prospecter. Ce n’était pas évident pour elles non plus, Camille Claudel est morte sans la moindre reconnaissance en 1943 dans un asile d’aliénés. Elle a été enfermée pendant 30 ans, elle a quand même été la muse de Rodin. Ils sont nombreux comme elle à ne pas avoir été reconnues, c’est récent en occident aussi. Et puis il y a aussi la femme arabe, j’ai essayé de retracer tout son parcours qui est très intéressant, qui est à découvrir parce qu’il n’est pas très connu chez nous. Je n’ai pas voulu me contenter des articles de presse et des catalogues, ce n’est pas suffisant, je voulais découvrir de vraies personnalités.
On vous sait passionnée de peinture, pourrait-on tomber sur un atelier chez vous ?
Moi je ne peins pas du tout, je n’ai aucun don pour ça. Je peins des mots, c'est ce qui m'intéresse. Peut être que la peinture est un prétexte pour écrire. C’est un beau prétexte en tout cas, parce qu’il y a de belles choses à découvrir. Vous savez, le peintre raconte une histoire à travers des couleurs des formes… Et puis il y a le monde fabuleux de la peinture, il y a toute une histoire, une évolution à travers les tendances, les mouvements. Par ailleurs, le ou la peintre se découvre dans sa peinture, il découvre ses émotions, ses affects, sa vie en quelque sorte, c’est une retranscription inconsciente. C’est à vous de décrypter, c’est un langage. Pour moi, c’est un beau prétexte pour l’écriture, et c’est aussi une autre manière de peindre.
Les jeunes auteurs algériens sont souvent confrontés à la frilosité de certaines maisons d'édition. Qu'en pensez-vous ?
C’est la même chose pour n’importe quel auteur, vous savez, à partir du moment où l’on sort des sentiers battus, ils ne prennent pas de risque, ils calculent le risque zéro. Vous parlez de frilosité, c’est peut-être vrai. Je pense qu’un éditeur ne veut pas prendre de risque chez nous parce qu’il y a des questions de financement. Il veut être sûr s’il fait un tirage conséquent que le produit se vende, mais moi je dirais qu’il faudrait peut-être encourager. Il existe un fond des arts et lettres avec lequel on peut encourager les jeunes auteurs, les éditer, c’est comme un mécénat, vous voyez ?
Puis il ne faut pas compter sur l’éditeur, il doit entrer dans ses fonds. Il est aussi question de promotion du livre : si elle est bien faite, bien relayée par les médias, tout le monde y gagne. Il faut encourager les jeunes, les lire. Les médias ont un rôle à jouer, c’est vous, les magazines, qui devez faire ça.
Un dernier mot ?
On m’a souvent demandé pourquoi onze, j’ai dit onze, ce n’est pas un déni par rapport aux autres. Il y en a beaucoup, des jeunes et des moins jeunes dont je n’ai pas parlé, mais que j’évoque dans l’introduction de cette ouvrage. Ça ne veut pas dire qu’elles sont moins talentueuses ou qu’elles ne sont pas intéressantes, mais le chantier est ouvert, d’autres peuvent écrire, c’est un filon, un gisement. Il y a des peintres hommes et femmes jeunes ou moins jeunes qui ont besoin d’être connus parce que si on n’écrit pas sur eux, si on se contente de petits catalogues, il ne restera rien sur eux. La peinture et l’écriture vont de paire, il faudrait inciter les écrivains et les auteurs à se pencher sur ces peintures. Je le répète, c’est un magnifique prétexte pour écrire.

Des ouvrages comme on les aime. Dans la collection Beau Livre avec photos, tableaux, aquarelles, couleurs et tout et tout ! Un opus qui retrace le parcours de onze grosses pointures de la peinture algériennes : Baya Mahieddine, Aïcha Haddad, Souhila Belbahar, Djamila Bent Mohamed, Habiba Bensekhar, Safia Zoulid, Latifa Boulfoul, Zahia Dahel, Djahida Houadef, Leïla Ameddah et Meriem Aït El Hara. A partir d’interviews qu’elle a elle-même réalisées, Djamila Flici-Guendil brosse les portraits de ces extraordinaires plasticiennes et lorsqu’elles ne sont plus de ce monde, elle visite les lieux où elles ont vécu. «J’arrive le cœur battant dans ce quartier de Sidi Yakoub situé au cœur de la ville de Blida... Je franchis le portail de la petite villa de style néo-mauresque… Je suis dans le palais de Baya la bien-nommée, la sultane et je l’imagine m’invitant chez elle, avec ce petit sourire tranquille et désabusé au coin des lèvres, elle la grande, qui assume post-mortem son statut d’icône nationale avec sa légendaire modestie» (page 23). Au sujet de Safia Zoulid, la reine de l’aquarelle, elle écrit : «Elle rejoint l’Ecole nationale des beaux-arts à Alger, en 1973, en remportant le concours haut la main, et goûte à l’ambiance artistique folle et joyeuse de cette époque… Elle aime Degas et les impressionnistes et commence déjà à peindre des aquarelles» (P. 87). Aquarelles, tableaux d’art, sculptures… un large éventail des œuvres de ces artistes de l’ancienne et nouvelle générations, accompagnent ces biographies. Un hommage à la mesure du talent de ces femmes qui ont donné toute leur vie pour l’amour de leur art. Djamila Flici-Guendil est diplômée de l’Ecole nationale d’administration d’Alger (ENA, promotion Malek-Bennabi, 1976-1980). Conseillère du ministre du Travail, de la Protection sociale et de la Formation professionnelle, puis auprès du ministre de la Culture, elle a également présidé le Conseil d’administration de l’Office national des droits d’auteur et des droits voisins (ONDA). Djamila Flici-Guendil a déjà publié Le dictionnaire des peintres, sculpteurs et designers algériens(Editions Diwan Al-Fen).
