“My paintings are created as a symbiosis of my multifaceted internal feelings, impressions and ideas concerning space and reincarnation. My main task is to create paintings that are full of feelings about all topics and soul moods, to demonstrate power, happiness and harmony for all people in various environments. I use different materials and techniques in order to create, through my paintings, the desired feelings and experiences. In my projects, I want to involve the spectator as a participant who can hopefully experience the feelings I convey.”
Elena Martém - Artist, designer, architect, illustrator - just the citizen of the Earth. She is a Swedish artist with unique style, utilising both encaustic and mix media. She uses several techniques such as oil, acrylic, drawing, lithography, mixed media, ink, etching and aquatint, pencil and encaustic.
About Encaustic
Encaustic is breaking all art stereotypes. This wax painting is interesting due to its unpredictability and surprising results. Consonance of the artist's inner world and outer world of picture turns as a game of meanings and unexpected associations.
To look at an encaustic picture is like following the landscape of one’s dreams ... Liberation from the tyranny of the external forms in common with the spontaneity of inner experience and surprising results. Paint is very resistant to UV light, various temperatures and hazardous conditions.
Encaustic - from the Greek word “Enkaio” – “burn out” - wax painting, done by hot and molten paints.
Encaustic is the ancient art of painting with hot wax. The encaustic technique is much older than oil painting. So far, we admire the fresh colours of Fayum portraits in Egypt, wall paintings in Herkulaneum and Pompei that have survived until today.
This technique, rediscovered recently in England and Germany, was in fact known 2000 years before Christ and can be found in the Egyptian Fayum portraits of El al-Fayyúm, in wall paintings during the age of the Roman Empire in Herkulaneume / Herculaneum, Pompeian wall paintings, and later in icon painting.
Wax makes these paints very resistant to UV light and the various temperatures, so some of these ancient works of art survived to our modern time.
Elena learned the encaustic technique seven years ago, with the help of books and videos of Micke Bossom. She continues to introduce the Swedish public to this technology through her exhibitions.
