Gérard Didier is a contemporary French sculptor. He embarked on a creative journey four decades ago that would lead him to master the art of direct stone cutting from the Haute Ardèche region. A self-taught artist, he gradually honed his craft by learning to merge the use of tools with the inherent forms found in nature and the tactile textures of various materials.
In addition to his artistic pursuits, Gérard Didier made significant contributions to the world of education. He co-founded the Plastic Arts-Studies sector at INSA (Institut National des Sciences Appliquées), where he assumed the role of leading the sculpture workshop from 1987 to 2003.
Gérard's early sculptural works primarily featured granite and basalt, showcasing his deep affinity for these geological materials. His talent was recognized with exhibitions at prestigious events such as the Salon d'Automne in 1982 and the Salon d'Hiver in 1986, where he earned a sculpture prize.
Over time, Gérard's artistic exploration expanded to include wood, a medium rich in history and character. His sculptures breathed life into the stories, both peaceful and tormented, held within the grains of this versatile material.
Throughout his career, Gérard Didier's works found their way into various collective and solo exhibitions in the Rhône-Alpes region of France. His art graced venues such as the Université Claude Bernard, the Faculty of Medicine, the Center des Clubs - Alexandre Bonjean, and more, captivating audiences with its unique blend of craftsmanship and creative expression.
From the tranquil confines of the Sainte Marguerite Chapel in Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon to the bustling Salon des Indépendants de Bron, Gérard's sculptures were a testament to his unwavering dedication to his craft. His work continued to be showcased at numerous events, galleries, and exhibitions.
