La taille directe est une technique de sculpture par laquelle l’artiste découpe directement un bloc brut de pierre, de marbre ou de bois à l’aide de divers matériaux pour en faire émerger la forme. Le sculpteur doit lui-même tailler le matériau. De nombreux outils sont alors nécessaires, comme la masse ou les ciseaux. Ainsi, les sculptures en taille directe sont toutes uniques. La technique s’est développée et améliorée au fil des siècles. Les sculptures en taille directe existent depuis la Préhistoire. Néanmoins, elles commencent à véritablement se développer durant l’Antiquité grecque et romaine.

The sculptor must carve the material himself. Many tools are then necessary, such as the mallet or the chisels. Thus, the direct carving sculptures are all unique. The technique has developed and improved over the centuries. Direct carving sculptures have existed since prehistoric times. Nevertheless, they began to really develop during Greek and Roman Antiquity.
