"My painting reflects the known, the close, the deep or the sometimes disturbing buried... The impression acts without your knowledge".

Of Bulgarian origin, it was in Veliko Tarnovo that Ivan Tzonev (or Citzo) learned drawing at the Beaux Arts, before teaching it himself. Ivan Tzonev, who is part of the new realism movement, becomes a recognized painter in his country and has many exhibitions there (Sofia, Galro, Varna). He admires painters such as Braque, Soutine, Vandangen, to whom he feels very close: their figurative works are for him a reference in terms of compositions, shapes, colors. It is now in France that Citzo has been established for more than 10 years.

All the plastic work of Citzo gives us to see the human being, his strength and his weakness: men and women, bodies and especially faces, which he creates by mixing techniques (acrylics, oils, dry pastels, watercolors , gouaches, pencils). This favorite theme remains at the center of all his research. This can be seen in the titles of the exhibitions he was able to produce, either collectively (as part of the fairs organized by the communist government then in power in Bulgaria), or individually: "seated men", "seated women", "earth and population", "work and the people", "the land of the heroes", "the sea and the people". When he paints, Ivan Tzonev thinks of the Slavic people: it is the faces of these people who work hard in the Bulgarian countryside that he draws, colors, paints. He shows us the rough looks and the rigid faces of these people whom life does not spare. Their destinies demand sacrifices from them, and their faces bear the traces. Ivan Tzonev is the painter of faces that reveal wounds; but he is also the one who penetrates beyond the harshness of difficult daily lives, and who reveals to us the existence of a gentleness specific to inner magic.
