German art history includes works from the earlier period of German-speaking regions. This is an important feature of German culture. In the 16th century, German artists began to open up to Italian influences. Sculptors of the Renaissance represented the golden age of German art. These artists included Albrecht Durer and Lucas Cranach.
By the mid-18th century, German artists began to fortify their nation by developing a unique artistic identity. Initially, this was limited to German-speaking areas. But as the 19th century progressed, more and more artists began to move to other regions. The result was a variety of art styles.
Another group of German artists was the Novembergruppe. It was a radical artistic movement. They pushed for changes in the laws governing artists. They also organized costume parties and literary events. Their style was based on primitive ideas and emotions.
During the Nazi regime, a number of artists participated in the Degenerate Art Exhibition. The sculptures included sad, emaciated figures. Other works were realistically painted. Many were stolen from the Paul Rosenberg collection.
Later in the 20th century, several artists became active in the Expressionist movement. These artists attracted musicians Max Butting and Hans Heinz Stuckenschmidt.
