German art history is one of the most exciting topics to study and discuss. It reveals the country's artistic heritage as a source of pride for its people. Aside from that, it showcases the country's ability to distinguish itself from other nations.
As a matter of fact, a number of important art movements have crossed Germany in the centuries. The first one that can be noted is the Neoclassicism that was connected with the Enlightenment. This period saw the emergence of new academies. Similarly, the Protestant Reformation led to the appearance of more secular subjects.
The second phase was the Jugendstil, a branch of the Art Nouveau movement. Architects such as Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Fritz Bleyl were members of this group. These artists emphasized the importance of abstract ornamentation over realism. They were also very influenced by the Dadaistic concepts.
In the early 20th century, Germany was known for grotesque art. This type of artwork was often characterized by violence and sexual imagery. For instance, Max Beckmann was a grotesque artist.
Another important aspect of the German grotesque style is that it was very political. It was promoted by powerful National Socialists. Their ideology viewed avant-garde art as deviating from classical beauty. However, the regime did not use harsh words to condemn it.
Finally, in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, there was the Berlin Secession group. This was one of the most influential groups in the history of German art. It was founded in 1898 by Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth.
