TAMBOUYA / TAMBOUYA (2015) Sculpture by Alex Boucaud

Alex Boucaud marks his era with the singularity of his sculptural approach.
It is during his initiatory and inquisitorial wanderings that he unearths the trunks, driftwood and other various roots that will provoke his creations.
He spontaneously deflowers each section of wood to extract its quintessence.
His pieces cultivate excessive deformations. They revisit attitudes and emotional or physical tendencies such as the "Bigidi".
They mix and crossbreed surrealism and totemic figures in an apparent rusticity and flagrant insolence.
His sculpted faces, his hollow-carved relief masks, his whole, multiple or fragmented, multi-dimensional characters, in the round or hollowed out, compressed or elongated, rough or smooth, with varied and contrasting patinas, deliver to us an expressionist art that explores the multiple universes of Creole and Guadeloupean identity, an art marked by primitivism and sometimes syncretism, the foundation of Caribbean cultural roots.
