ARMAND PASCAL ANIAMBOSSOU:
The painter Aniambossou was born on August 27th, 1936 from commercial parents residing at Ouidah, small town located at the south of Benin. Its childhood is marked by a strict education which he receives from his mother, empowered woman equipped with a religious direction and a steadfast faith animist. She will initiate him with the practices of animism and Christianism of which from wich he carry out later the synthesis well. The young Aniambossou grows consequently in a syncretic mystical environment which later will determine its personality, even his pictorial work. At the school, Aniambosou appears equipped with rare predispositions in the field of the drawing; encouraged by his teachers, He very early decides to be devoted to the object of its passion which is the drawing and later painting. His beginnings in Cotonou large metropolis Beninese, are difficult and disappointing, His first exhibition show a resounding failure. His father dies prematurely during the same time (at the end of 1956). These events deeply destabilize him without however breaking its ambition.
Deprived by the financial support and psychological whose his father constituted the essential base, Aniambossou then carries out well the painfulness of the way which he choosed. He leaves Benin for Ghana where he meets Koffi Antuban, painter with the established fame with who it binds friendship. Encouraged by his new friend, Aniambossou carries out a true handing-over in question of its talent and gives up consequently the simplistic vision which it hitherto had of his Article Through work and sacrifices in a quasi hostile environment, the work of Aniambossou carries out a remarkable qualitative transformation, on the double plan of the design and the result. Its first exposure organized to Accra in 1957 has extraordinary success in the public opinion and on the side of criticism. Consequently the painter Aniambossou acquires a new dimension. In 1960 it returns to Benin and organizes a series of exhibitions which get support of the Head of the State. In 1963 on official invitation of the German Democratic republic, it goes to Berlin to represent the painting of Dahomey (current Benin). Following a great exposure to the International Arts centre of Berlin, many Aniambossou tables are bought by various German institutions, among which the Museum of ethnology of. Le plus ancien, si ce n'est l'un des plus anciens peintres africains, Armand Aniambossou peint depuis une cinquantaine d'années, et est considéré comme l'un des peintres africains majeurs.
Avouant avoir été conforté dans sa vocation quand il a appris qu'un Rembrandt pouvait valoir plusieurs millions de francs français de l'époque, Aniambossou a développé un style qui lui est propre, oscillant entre la peinture abstraite, inaccessible au profane, et figurative, il affirme rester fidèle à la figuration afin de rester accessible au plus grand nombre.
Reconnu par les plus grands critiques, c'est donc un "maître" que vous découvrez cette semaine, via quelques questions auxquelles il a bien voulu répondre, et des photos de quelques unes de ses oeuvres.
Armand Aniambossou, depuis quand peignez-vous ?
J'ai commencé en 1956, cela va faire 50ans.
Avez-vous suivi une formation ?
Non, je suis autodidacte, complètement, je n'ai jamais eu de maîtres.
Quand j'ai commencé, j'avais 20 ans...je travaillais seul, durement.
Vos tableaux ont des titres comme"Le boss et son souffleur", "La longue marche du chercheur", "Dans le doute et dans la peur", "le Bal des Oiseaux", "Quand le peuple se lèvera."..
D'où viennent-ils? y-a-til dans votre peinture, des thèmes récurrents
Cela me vient de manière spontanée. Je suis inspiré, je peins. Le titre vient une fois le tableau terminé. C'est mon fils Alain qui la plupart du temps trouve les titres après que je lui ai expliqué ce que j'ai voulu dire avec ma peinture.
Ce sont des titres poétiques. Avant tout, je veux bannir la vulgarité. Je veux aborder des thèmes qui interpellent l'humanité
"Quand le peuple se lèvera" est une sorte de testament politique que j'adresse à la jeunesse.
La peinture est la révélation de ce qui se passe sur cette terre et de ce que nous vivons.
La peinture, c'est une vision du monde.
Vous évoluez entre abstraction et figuration, pourquoi ce choix ?
J'évolue en effet entre les deux, mais je reste en réalité fidèle à la figuration pour rester accessible, que les gens me comprennent.
Pensez-vous qu'il y a aujourd'hui une reconnaissance des artistes contemporains africains?
Oui, je le pense, de plus en plus. Quand j'ai commencé au Bénin, j'étais pratiquement le seul.
Si vous aviez un message à faire passer aux jeunes artistes, quel serait-il ?
Il ne faut pas considérer la peinture comme le métier d'un travailleur ordinaire qui attend son salaire à la fin du mois. Il faut persister. Il faut travailler d'arrache-pied pour se faire estimer et vivre de sa peinture.
Ils seront récompensés par le fruit de leur travail. Il faudrait aussi pour cela que les jeunes s'intéressent de plus en plus à l'art.
A mes débuts, dans les années 50, j'ai entendu qu'un tableau de Rembrandt : "Aristote contemplant le buste d'Homère", s'était vendu aux Etats-Unis 500 millions de F CFA (NDLR: 750.000euros environ).. J'ai compris que la peinture pouvait avoir une valeur inestimable. Je n'ai jamais vu ce tableau, j'aimerais le voir un jour, il m'a fait beaucoup rêver.
C'est ce qui a provoqué votre vocation?
Non, pas vraiment! Mais cela m'a encouragé à continuer, je me suis dit : "un jour, moi aussi, je vendrai mes tableaux 500 Millions de F CFA".
A l'époque, je vendais mes tableaux 2000 ou 3000 CFA (NDLR: entre 3 et 5 euros)!
Mais je me pose la question : pourquoi y-a-t-il une catégorie de gens qui ne s'approche jamais de la peinture?
Il faut nourrir le regard, pas seulement le ventre. Les yeux ont besoins d'être nourris. Pas seulement en s'entourant des photographies de ses proches. La nourriture des yeux, ce sont les tableaux.
Si vous avez une certaine aisance, il faut vous entourer de tableaux. Si c'était mon cas, je serais collectionneur de peintures. Il faut vivre avec ce qui se passe.

Pionnier, précurseur, Armand Pascal ANIAMBOSSOU est un maître dans son art. Son œuvre est encensée dans les 4 coins de la terre et il est une référence. Même s’il dit vivre des fruits de son art, il regrette cependant que l’inertie de son pays et de bien d’autres en Afrique, incapables de créer des conditions, ait été un facteur aggravant pour ne pas lui permettre de former des jeunes. Défenseur acharné de l’Afrique, il exprime toute sa colère envers les gouvernants africains dont le manque de vision pour le continent, livre celui-ci à l’autel du mépris…
Aujourd’hui la quatre-vingtaine presque sonnée, l’artiste reste un homme ouvert, en alerte et à l’écoute de son environnement comme le montre son propos ci-dessous.

Avant de vous présenter à nos lecteurs/lectrices, j’aimerais savoir comment percevez-vous votre travail artistique. Est-ce comme œuvre prophétique comme j’ai pu le lire sur votre site ? Et si tel est le cas, comment se traduit cette prophétie dans vos œuvres ?
Mon œuvre artistique et picturale est essentiellement tournée vers la recherche permanente avec ses trouvailles et ses questionnements. Les premiers fruits de ses recherches ont donné il y a plus de 20 ans ce que certains experts ont dénommé : Les visages tourmentés et depuis quelques années mes créations se traduisent par une sorte d’aller-retour du cubisme, c’est le cubisme premier, le cubisme profond, le cubisme renouvelé, le cubisme renouvelable, celui –là même qui puise sa source dans les traditions artistiques africaines ancestrales. En langage poétique c’est du Forcusbisme.
Mon œuvre se veut prophétique en ce sens qu’elle est annonciatrice d’une ère nouvelle et ouvre de nouveaux champs dans la recherche picturale en Afrique et dans le monde. Mais à la vérité seule l’histoire le dira…
En quelques mots qui est Armand Pascal ANIAMBOSSOU
Je suis l’un des premiers peintres professionnels du Bénin et de l’Afrique.Actif depuis près de 60 ans et auteur d’une œuvre majeure avec des milliers de tableaux et de dessins répandus à travers le monde.
Beaucoup de livres et de publications situent mon œuvre picturale parmi les plus accomplies et la place parmi celles des plus grands : Il va sans dire que tout ceci ne me laisse pas indifférent, loin s’en faut.
Je suis aussi et surtout un artiste qui a rapidement découvert sa vocation et qui a vécu toutes les humiliations, frustrations en qualité d’artiste peintre mais aussi qui a souffert et continue de souffrir de la désorganisation totale du secteur culturel et du manque d’intérêt de l’élite africaine vis-à-vis de ce secteur. Comment pouvons-nous accepter que ce soit toujours l’étranger qui vienne à notre secours, et qui nous mette en lumière ?
ANIAMBOSSOU qui est votre patronyme, a-t-il une signification particulière en votre langue ?
Je suis en fait originaire du morceau de territoire qu’on appelle aujourd’hui Bénin mais mes grands parents viennent du Nigeria et précisément de l’ethnie appelée Youruba. Mon nom veut dire celui qui ne dort jamais avec la colère dans son cœur.
Quel sens donnez-vous à votre travail en général ?
Je suis tributaire de mon inspiration. Mes œuvres naissent généralement de façon spontanée sans préméditation ; je les découvre tout au long du processus de création et je les accompagne tout en essayant de leur donner mon onction personnelle, ma touche à moi. Mais en définitive elles me semblent étrangères. Il m’arrive de me demander parfois si j’en suis vraiment le vrai auteur.

Qu’est ce qui à ce jour a été votre source d’inspiration principale et pourquoi ?
Je n’ai pas une autre source d’inspiration que la vie en elle-même tant elle est riche, diverse et toujours en mouvement.
Mais la mort aussi m’inspire en ceci qu’elle fait partie intégrante de la vie. Sans elle la vie perd de sa raison d’être, de sa substance voire elle devient impossible.
Comment se déroule le processus de création d’une œuvre chez vous ? Est-ce le même processus observé dans chacune d’elles?
Comme je vous l’ai indiqué précédemment ma démarche créatrice est d’abord volontariste car c’est bien moi qui décide de me saisir d’un pinceau et de me présenter devant mon chevalet, mais lorsque je suis face à la toile je n’ai plus totalement la maîtrise des événements, mais j’y participe à coup sûr parfois en maître parfois pas, mais enfin ce qui compte c’est la beauté et l’originalité de ce qui en sort.

ANIAMBOSSOU a-t-il profité des fruits de ses œuvres ? Dans les deux cas (oui/non) quelles en sont les raisons ?
J’ai toujours vécu de mon travail tant et si bien que je n’ai exercé que ce métier là.
Maintenant en ai-je profité des fruits : Oui et non.
Oui !!Parce que je suis toujours en vie et continue de travailler.Non!! Parce que j’aurais pu mieux faire, j’aurais pu, n’eut- été les conditions de travail et l’environnement inappropriés qui caractérisent nos pays, former de nombreux jeunes africains pour maintenir la flamme allumée.
Vous qui êtes un maître et avez une longue et riche carrière, pouvez-vous nous dire qui sont en Afrique vos inspirateurs, vos modèles, vos mentors ?
Ayant commencé très jeune, je n’ai pas vraiment eu de modèles, mais j’ai fait des rencontres qui ont changé le cours de mon existence et lui ont donné du sens. De fait c’est un jeune congolais qui se promenait avec ses tableaux comme le font les marchands à la sauvette qui m’a montré ses tableaux peints et plus tard m’a initié. Si je puis dire, à la composition de la palette et ce fut le début d’une longue, très longue aventure picturale et humaine. Je ne l’ai plus jamais revu hélas.
Avez-vous la même hargne ou la même passion pour votre art aujourd’hui comme à vos débuts ?
Chaque jour m’apporte de nouvelles joies surtout lorsque je parviens à trouver des compositions que je n’ai pas cherchées. C’est un bonheur toujours renouvelé qui n’est pas exprimable par les mots, car les plaisirs de l’esprit contrairement à ceux de la chair ne sont point précaires et évanescents. Leur félicité ne peut être contée…
De toutes vos œuvres, choisissez en deux que vous estimez être les plus abouties à vos yeux, pourquoi le sont-elles et décrivez-les nous.
En ce qui me concerne, Il n’ y a pas d’œuvre aboutie ou pas aboutie/ C’est tout le problème de la création artistique. Toutefois j’ai des tableaux pour lesquels j’ai une plus grande sensibilité eu égard au moment de leur création et aux circonstances qui les ont déterminées : c’est l’hypothèse du tableau intitulé : La Joconde noire qui est une commande de mon fils Alain Alfred et pour lequel il a écrit un beau poème que je vous ferai découvrir à l’occasion. La Joconde noire est une œuvre de représentation de la beauté féminine avec tout ce qu’elle a de sensuel et de rêverie/ Le choix du visage revient au contemplateur, le reste du corps étant là, splendide, délice de tous les délices…

Le 2e tableau est plus classique: on y voit tout et on peut s’imaginer tout. A la vérité, il est une invitation à tous nos contemporains à être les gardiens de la nature; et à ne pas la souiller car elle demeure notre mamelle nourricière, nous d’aujourd’hui et ceux de demain.

Étant un homme d’un âge avancé, bientôt 80 ans, j’ai pu accumuler quelques expériences tout au long de mon existence, et ai fait le constat constant que nous souffrons en Afrique d’un manque d’organisation dans tous les domaines. Cet état de fait fragilise totalement nos sociétés, engendre la misère et le désordre et crée le mépris que nous connaissons à travers le monde en notre qualité d’africains.

Le temps est venu pour nos gouvernants de penser d’abord aux peuples qu’ils gouvernent et à leur bien être car c’est la seule voie pour eux de rester et de marquer l’histoire. L’autisme narcissique auquel ils livrent pour la plupart contribue à entretenir le mépris dont est victime l’homme africain. Je vous remercie.

Du flux et du reflux dans le cubisme
L'artiste béninois Aniambossou développe aujourd'hui un style personnel et inédit empreint d'une grande spiritualité: C'est le forcubisme ; c'est-à-dire le cubisme authentique, le cubisme profond, le cubisme renouvelé et renouvelable; celui là même qui tire sa source à l'origine de l'ancestralité et des civilisations africaines...
Une importante partie de la production d’Armand Aniambossou a ce caractère aller-retour de l’art africain. et pastel). On y reconnaît la composition fantastique de la première période cubiste caractéristique des Demoiselles d’Avignon. Je constate que les éléments anthropomorphes dans le travail d’Aniambossou sont plus nettement apparentés aux masques et statuettes des arts du Bénin et de la Côte d’Ivoire que ne le sont les deux figures de droite dans le tableau de Picasso, lesquelles sont considérées comme étant le plus inspirées de l’art nègre. Dans les œuvres d’Armand Aniambossou on ressent la transposition en deux dimensions de la ronde-bosse et autres détails tridimensionnels, là même où Picasso utilise à la manière de Cézanne la division des volumes en masses géométriques de couleurs modulées.
Dans L’Art du Bénin par W. et B. Forman et Philip Dark, édition Artia, Prague, 1960, les auteurs citent un spécialiste de la culture binie (du Bénin), le Dr R. E. Bradbury qui a observé que : la tête est représentée symboliquement comme " siège du discernement " ; le bras et la main comme " siège du pouvoir de réaliser ". Cette sémiologie me semble présente dans les œuvres post-cubistes d’Armand Aniambossou, Cette dimension, le sens, de l’art nègre, en l’occurrence celui du Bénin, n’existe pas dans le cubisme européen, malgré le goût et l’admiration de l’esthétique des masques et statuettes.
Il y a en Europe des peintres en activité, parfois des jeunes, dont la production est post-cubiste, mais cela ne se confond pas avec le cubisme d’un Africain.
La pertinence de ce travail est ainsi dans le fait qu’il représente la flexion cubiste de l’art africain par un Africain authentique. Il se manifeste au meilleur endroit, l’Afrique noire, où l’après-cubisme peut représenter une source d’intérêt culturel, car il apparaît comme un phénomène d’esthétique en contact prolongé.
