Leymah Roberta Gbowee, a remarkable woman. Yet her early years were anything but colourful. She was prevented from continuing her studies when, at the age of 17, she was forced to flee her home during the Liberian civil war and ended up in a refugee camp in Ghana. She later returned to her home country and worked as a social worker and trauma counsellor for child soldiers. As a peace activist, she also worked for peace and women in influential positions. She built bridges between Christian and Muslim women and, thanks to her peace movement "Women of Liberia Mass Action for peace", ensured an end to the second Liberian civil war.
Thanks in part to this initiative, free elections could take place and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf became the first female president in Africa! Leyhmah followed the Liberian leaders across the country's borders. Among other things, she set up a pan-African organisation in Ghana with the aim of involving women more in decision-making around peace and security. In 2007, she got her masters degree in conflict management. In 2011, she won the Nobel Peace Prize and many other awards and honours. I could go on and on about the fantastic initiatives of this wonderful woman... But I would like to end with this powerful quote from her: "I'm a serious optimist. I come from a country where you have little to be hopeful for, and so you have to always be an optimist".

Her passion for travel and diverse cultures broadens her view on the (art) world and inspires her. You notice this in many of her works. Everywhere she sets foot, she leaves a piece of her heart behind. Just a piece of her heart, because in addition to being a passionate artist, Els is also an ardent advocate of nature conservation and animal rights, of which her international action #waronplastic is just one example.
