My sculptures are predominantly curvilinear in form and often aim to capture a formal shape or concept, such as a mobius loop. I work mainly in limestone, marble and alabaster as it holds detail and can be worked with relative fluidity, allowing me to create the illusion of naturally metamorphosed and twisted stone.
I derive immense satisfaction from transforming the raw material into a timeless piece of art using my hands. The knowledge that I am creating something physical - an enduring object that exists in a physical reality, creates a feeling of lasting pride and equanimity. When I work the stone I feel an affinity with something transcendental - a fundamental connection with earth and its origins.
Each new sculpture is approached from several angles. I contemplate the stone, searching for the form within and explore the negative space, until I arrive at a definite structure. I then sketch ideas or produce maquettes to guide the creative process. The piece that I produce must have balance between the form and the feelings it invokes.
My passion is to create art that reflects the type of environment I enjoy living in: uncomplicated, with minimalist influences and an essential harmony. This has led to a desire to work with partners such as architects, interior and exterior designers, to create complimentary sculptures for aesthetically pleasing living and working spaces.
I am now seeking commissions for sculptures on a medium and larger scale, such as public art pieces, and also producing smaller limited edition castings in bronze and other materials.
