Devi Rani Dasgupta, born in 1983 in Bapudham Motihari, a small town in East Champaran district of North Bihar, India, is a talented expressionist painter known for her unique approach to Madhubani painting. Growing up in a joint family, Devi showed an early inclination toward art, enjoying drawing on the verandas of her home from the age of three. Recognizing her natural talent, her parents encouraged her artistic development by providing basic training in fine arts and music and later, learning from renowned artists in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Kolkata.
Devi's passion for art led her to experiment with Madhubani, a famous folk art of Bihar, infusing its intricate lines and minimal brushstrokes with her own artistic flair. Her work combines vibrant colors, bold strokes, and textures, and often features figurative compositions focusing on human expression and landscapes. Themes such as Mother & Child, Radha & Krishna, and King & Queen dominate her oeuvre, all presented in a two-dimensional style with flat color applications and an emphasis on fine lines.
After graduating in Zoology from B.B.R. Ambedkar University in 2004, Devi pursued her dream of becoming a painter. She has since held nine solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group shows, art fairs, and workshops both in India and abroad. Her work has garnered critical acclaim, earning her several awards and a devoted following among private and public collectors in India and overseas.
Currently based in Kolkata, Devi Rani Dasgupta continues to create art that celebrates the beauty of traditional Indian folk art while infusing it with her contemporary vision.
