Deidra Smith
Deidra Smith, born in 1954, is a contemporary artist renowned for beautifully detailed nature art and deeply moving animal portraits. Growing up by the Hoosier National Forest in Indiana of the United States, back-country trails and rolling hills in this forested treasure ignited a lifelong passion. Her talent for drawing was recognized in elementary school and she began exhibiting and accepting commissions for oil paintings and soft pastel drawings in high school. She studied with Riley Bertrum in Indiana's Brown County art mecca and was invited to show in his galleries for her proficiency with realistic landscapes. Her ability to capture expression in an animal’s eyes won her Best of Show and President’s Choice awards. In addition to accepting commissions, she exhibited in juried shows, the Spring Mill State Park gallery and the Spring Mill Inn.
Taking it to a new level, she toured East Africa with the Humane Society of the United States’ photographic safari. She followed that with personal tours in wilderness areas of the Western United States rich with wildlife including Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming. Settling in Loveland, Colorado, by Rocky Mountain National Park, she expanded into online exhibiting and donates art to raise funds for wildlife protection and no-kill shelters. Her distinctive style excites the senses with detailed natural beauty and touches the heart with intuitive, sensitive animal portraiture.

Art training
I studied with Riley Bertram, painter, poet and writer from the city of Nashville, in the art mecca of Brown County, in the state of Indiana, USA. Mr. Bertram’s work has been displayed in galleries in the cities of Indianapolis, Nashville, Madison, and Franklin all in Indiana state where I was born. Before his passing in 2000, he owned Bertram Studios and Bertram-East Frame and Art Gallery in Nashville. He invited me to exhibit in his galleries thanks to the meticulous realistic detail in my art.

American Wild Horse Conservation annual fall fundraiser for 2025.
Online
I’m excited to share that the American Wild Horse Conservation is planning their annual fall fundraiser for 2025. This event traditionally includes both a live and silent auction and I am donating artwork. I am also offering to create horse portraits in exchange for people making donations to AWHC’s work to protect wild horses and burros.
