Paul Constantinides – born in San Diego, raised in Sao Paulo and now living in Sunrise, Florida – is a photographer, a poet, a journalist, a song writer and an architect.
Born in 1959, Constantinides moved with his family to Brazil at age four. He became a still photographer in the early 1980s, working for television and cinema producers. During this time, Constantinides publicly showcased his images at photography schools, exhibitions, and libraries. His work gained widespread recognition and was displayed in museums and cultural centers, including the well-known Museum of Art in Sao Paulo and the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro. Constantinides’s photographs were also published in major magazines, including Cinotica, Photoart, and Fotoptica, the latter of which called him one of the exciting new generation of photographers.
In 1989, Constantinides and other photographers published the book “Sao Paulo Gigante e Intimista, a cidade vista por 12 fotografos (Giant Sao Paulo and Intimacy, a city seen by 12 photographers).” The next year, the National Foundation of the Art of Brazil chose photos from his work Paisagem Util (Useful View) for its renowned collection. His best-known works from this period are Pequenos Retratos da Rua Augusta (Little Portraits of Augusta Street) and Paisagem Util.
It was during the 1990s when Constantinides became dedicated to his new career as an architect. Many of his projects related to environmental research. Along with other researchers, he published Assim Caminha a Humanidade, um estudo da relacao do Homem com a Natureza (Thus Walks Humanity, a study of the relation of Man with Nature).
In the late 1990s, Constantinides published “Retomar (Starting Over),” a book of poetry and photography in which his writing illustrated his photography. He also contributed to weekly articles for the newspapers Folha de Jacarei and O Valeparaibano.
In the year 2000, Constantinides moved to the city of Sunrise, where he resides with his family today. He worked as a photographer for the Florida Review newspaper and displayed his photography during the show entitled “Portraits of South Florida,” an exhibition at the Main Library of Broward County.
Today, Constantinides is developing new photographic works, including Electric Road, Urban Signs, The Sky Above Us, Boats, and Brazilians in South Florida. He writes articles and stories for Brazilian newspapers, including Tabloide Cultural, and gives Portuguese lessons for various businesses. He also is writing lyrical music; one of his works will be published by the guitarist Antonio Oviedo on the album Pescador (Fisherman), to be released in July of this year.
