Cody Choi
Cody Choi is a contemporary photographer and choreographer known for his stunning figurative portraits of dancers. Born in Hong Kong and a dancer himself, Cody captures the dynamism and passion of his subjects with an expert eye. Cody’s work is funded by the Arts Council England, as well as commissioned by the Royal Opera House, Greenwich Dance London and exhibited globally.
FROM DANCER TO PHOTOGRAPHER
Cody graduated in Modern Dance in 2000 from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, where he received the Jackie Chan Scholarship twice. Cody was then awarded a full scholarship to join the Transitions Dance Company at Laban in London. He has a breadth of international performing experience, including 3 international touring seasons with Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake as well as the English National Opera and the Royal National Theatre. This has no doubt provided the artist with the photographic reflexes and perception required to apprehend and seize the trajectory of his dancers as they glide through urban and suburban landscapes.
CODY CHOI’S STYLE AND APPROACH
Cody’s breathtaking female portraits like Dancer: Selina create a visceral sensation of flight and thrill. Observers are pinned to the spot as they anticipate the dancers’ next move. His approach isn’t simply to follow their movement though, but to move and ‘breath with them’. As well as the beautiful shapes of their bodies, Cody pays close attention to the dance of their clothes, hair and expressions for an all-engulfing action shot.
EXHIBITIONS AND COLLECTIONS
Cody’s extensive experience as a dancer is equal to his acclaim as a modern photographer. He has shot for Samsung TV, Ben Sherman, Affordable Art Fair in Hong Kong, Singapore and London, and Saatchi Art in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, London and Bristol. He has also been featured in London TV, Samsung TV, Time Out, Aesthetica Magazine, Metro Newspaper, the Evening Standard, and more.

I invited her to the studio as I thought she has some very special energy and dynamic in her movements. Turned out that it was a photography session that not only has she surprised me but also herself, with the ability to effortlessly control her body in creating layers of momentum floating across frames.”

View allWhat is dance?
It is a series of movements.
What is photography?
It is capturing a split second in time.
How do you capture a series of movements in a split second?
This collection challenges the boundary of photography and create "moving" images that show passage of time.

View all"Follow not only the movement, but breathe with the dancers" is Cody's approach to his dance photography. He believes that a movement doesn’t stop at the point the dancer completes it. It is still there floating around, creating levels of vibrations across the air and enveloping the space with its heat and scent.

While you are isolated from the rest of the world, what is the one thing that keep you going?
During the pandemic, we are asked to give up a lot things in our life: job, relationship, home or even your dream. While we are choosing which to let go one by one, what is the one last thing you always hold tight?
While covid-19 has stirred up the whole world, at least one thing is made clear to me—I can never live without Dancing.
To be or not to be— isn’t it easier just to quit? It is indeed, but it will never be my option.
And I hope the same to you -
