Christophe Milcent, a contemporary sculptor hailing from Nantes, is a master of breathing life into steel. His artistic journey found its roots in the streets of Nantes, nurtured at the Pivaut school. The pivotal moment in his artistic evolution occurred in the workshop of his father, a master locksmith-welder, where the allure of steel captivated his soul.
Starting with simple forms and progressing towards increasing complexity, Milcent crafted his first sculptures in welded steel. His artistic horizons expanded during a year spent on the island of Reunion, where he drew inspiration from Asian and African arts, infusing a diverse cultural tapestry into his work.
Iron, as Milcent's preferred medium, serves as a bridge between his passion for sculpting and his fascination with astrophysics. Guided by a lifelong fascination with the stars, the iron he sculpts is sourced from the first solar star, establishing a profound connection with the matter that animates all living beings on Earth.
The raw textures of Milcent's sculptures evoke telluric forces and the very creation of matter itself. The steel bands within his works symbolize the perpetual renewal inherent in all things. Since 2011, he has created monumental sculptures displayed in various communes, predominantly in Brittany. Additionally, select pieces have become integral parts of the collections housed at the Château des Pères near Rennes.
Christophe Milcent's artistic expression is a harmonious fusion of craftsmanship, cultural influences, and a deep connection with the cosmos. Through steel, he not only breathes life into his sculptures but also weaves a narrative that transcends earthly boundaries, reaching for the stars and embodying the perpetual renewal of the cosmos in each intricate creation.
