Valérie Schmitt, known artistically as "CHAE," was born in 1974 in Paris and currently resides and works in the South-West of France. At the age of 19, she moved to California, USA, where she fell in love with the country and spent eight years as a charm model. After experiencing a turbulent period in her life, she returned to France, continuing her modeling career and expanding into dance and stage magic shows featuring grand illusions. She performed on prestigious stages such as Zeniths and Bobino and became a mother during this time. Her beauty and talent led her to win the Madame France competition in 2017, an official beauty contest for women over 25, organized by the Miss Nationale committee.
Despite her diverse career, painting has always been a constant presence in CHAE's life. It was through the introspection involved in writing her book, "911 Valerie Schmitt," that she fully realized the significance of painting in her journey. This introspective work brought her peace and allowed her to channel her sensitivity into her paintings, which are characterized by a technique she calls spontaneous realism. This style, seen as a rebirth of contemporary art, captures immediate reality with vivid dynamism, allowing viewers to feel the embedded movement in her works.
CHAE is known for her ability to paint on various surfaces, particularly aged wood combined with oil paint. Her artworks often feature detailed eyes and expressions, along with elements of blur and spontaneity, creating dynamic, natural, and colorful pieces that are both deep and surprising. Her encounter with the renowned sculptor Renaud Matgen introduced her to a new sculptural technique, allowing her to explore new creative avenues. She finds joy in the fusion of slate and color, creating unique works that transform with light, bringing a distinctive touch to her art.
