According to Esch, the tree-planting project began in 2006 at Kennedy Park in Oregon.
“With the help of friends and neighbors, over 50 trees have been planted, greatly increasing the health and beauty of the park,” said Esch. “This year’s goal is to plant 50 trees in Town Park to shade the playground equipment and new walking trails.”
One of the groups helping with this year’s project is Oregonians Working and Living Sustainably (“OWLS”).
Artists participating in Verde Art, “The Tree Series,” include Kathy E. Esch, Carolyn Bishop, Tom Muckler, Ava Olsen, Susan Hoffman, Ginny Bores, Carol Ottenstein, Jacki Martindale, and Liz Oz Primozic. Artist's Statement
I have been an artist at heart for as long as I can remember, yet it's only in retirement that I've had time to pursue my passion. Watercolor and pastels are currently my preferred media, although I have also worked in oils in the past. I am a strong believer in lifelong learning and continue to take classes in painting at every opportunity.

Surely I can't be the only person who is getting more than a little tired of snow, of cold and of the gray skies that bring both.
Here in the deep midwinter, a look at color and spring seems particularly refreshing and appetite-whetting.
So consider taking in a local show of local artists.
I'm talking about the show by the collective
Verde Art (Green Art) that is up at Manna Cafe and Bakery in Madison through Feb. 28.
Manna Cafe is a from-scratch bakery and neighborhood gathering place at 611 N. Sherman Ave. on Madison's north side.
Show hours for the duration of the exhibit will be Monday-Friday, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturdays, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Sundays, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The show, called "Verde Art" to raise awareness of environmental concerns, showcases a wide range of creative works -- from acrylics and pastels to watercolors, mixed media, pencils, and photography.
Many of these artists have Madison or Wisconsin roots, and many put off practicing their art during their working lifetime only to pick it up in retirement.
Artists represented include Kathy E. Esch (animal portraits), Ava Olsen (tropical colors and creatures of Costa Rica), Carol Ottenstein, Lizzie Oz Primozic, Susan Hoffman (landscapes), Ginny Bores, Tom Muckler, Jacki Martindale and Carolyn Bishop (floral and landscapes in watercolor and pastels).

Somewhere in Tuscany
Dreaming of a memorable week in Tuscany a couple of years ago, I recently immersed myself in capturing that delicious moment in pastels.
