Le lac Naivasha, jadis miroir d'eaux claires et refuge pour une faune vibrante, s'assèche inexorablement. Les cultures de roses, gourmandes en eau, drainent le lac de sa vie. Les poissons, ne survivent plus, et les oiseaux autrefois si nombreux s'évanouissent dans l'oubli. Le flamant rose, emblème de ces rivages, voit son avenir s'effriter.
Le fond de la toile, d'un brun terreux, évoque la désolation d'un lac agonisant. Survolant cette scène de désastre, un papillon en noir et blanc plane, messager de la mort. Ses ailes contrastent avec le spectre de couleurs vives de la rose, rappelant que toute beauté a son prix.
Les flamants roses, victimes de la déforestation et du changement climatique, sont en voie de disparition. La montée des eaux d'autres lacs, conséquence directe de la perturbation climatique et de la déforestation, accentue leur exil forcé. Chaque pétale de la rose, chaque trait du couteau, murmure la fragilité de ces écosystèmes sacrifiés sur l'autel du commerce des fleurs.
Et lorsque ces roses, après un long voyage au bilan carbone désastreux, parviennent en Europe pour orner les bouquets de la Saint-Valentin, elles portent en elles la tristesse de Naivasha, la mémoire d'un paradis perdu. Le flamant rose, fragile et éphémère, se tient là, écho d'une nature en détresse, appel à la conscience d'un monde à protéger.
