"So...is this based on real events?"
Enamored with the mix of unconventional modes of design, my subjects explore new ways of portraying old Hollywood glamour. The starting point from traditional art to digital originated from an idea on photomontage. I often would find myself trying to create photographic works of celebrated icons in the context of real glimpses and transparent moments. The portrait of James Dean and Marilyn Monroe together in the urban cityscape of New York was the result of that process of experimentation. What transpired after 74 layers of digitally rendered images was something I had not planned. The fictional portrayal highlighted the complexity of social media where images confined to the Internet allow things to manifest themselves. The truth is, Marilyn and James Dean never got to make a movie together or interact simultaneously on camera. While we have complete access to all the resources and technology to find the distinction between fact and fiction, how do two moody, talented, yet troubled icons continue to stir such curiosity for a large segment of the public? I began to think maybe what is real isn’t the same as getting it right.
While we look forward toward the future more than any generation before our time, we still reimagine within the framework of ‘what if’s’ and ‘wishful thinking.’ And in the case of icons in black and white, perhaps we’re also not as good at letting go the good who die young. To reawaken a sense of wonder through sensibilities is above everything else. It is an emotional reaction not to the perfect or to the complete, but to the imperfect and incomplete. To be brilliant is to be misunderstood and much like curiosity, it is a motivational force. We know just enough to know that we want to know more; there is something here, we just don't know what. As an artist, I welcome the challenge for the purpose of discovering what you KNOW is brilliant and the distinction concerning brailliant – for what you FEEL to be true.
