Life in a new city can feel overwhelming—tough choices, challenges, and the inner battles we all face. But even when it feels like you’re alone in the chaos, there’s always a glimmer of hope, a chance for something better waiting just around the corner.
This painting reflects that journey: the struggles, the growth, and the unexpected opportunities that can change everything. When I first read the story of Zanders and Stevie in Mile High, I fell in love with their journey—a confident hockey player and a shy flight attendant falling in love city by city. I associated myself with the insecurities that Steve went through, so I wanted to capture their adventures, Chicago’s high life and the way love can help us find ourselves.
The dark tones in the painting show those heavy feelings of doubt and insecurity we all experience. However, behind all that there is light and hope that lives within all of us, also, there’s the gold—a nod to Zanders' love for extravagance and a symbol of hope, new beginnings, and the strength to rise above.
This piece is more than art—it’s a reminder that even in life’s toughest moments, light and possibility are always there if we’re willing to see them.
