Os pigmeus são originários das florestas tropicais e equatoriais da África. Foram descobertos há cerca de 2 mil anos e podem ser encontrados nas florestas de países como Angola, Camarões, Gabão, Namíbia, Ruanda, Zaire e outros.
Eles se dividem em grupos: Aka, Baka, Mbuti (os mais conhecidos) e Twa. Cada qual com características culturais particulares, tal como a língua e a diferente forma de desempenhar o ofício da caça.
Segundo estudiosos, o que explica a sua estatura resulta do ambiente em que esses povos vivem. Eles se adaptaram ao ambiente, pois com pouco contato com a luz, eles absorveram pouca vitamina D (responsável pelo fortalecimento dos ossos).

Beatriz Mignone Viana Rosa, autodidata em pintura a óleo e acrílico sobre tela, é responsável pela direção do Bia-Atelier de Artes em Macaé RJ-Brasil, onde leciona também. Conheceu o mundo das artes através de celeste barcelos e sua mãe Zóra Mignone; aprimorou sua tecnica atraves de pesquisas em livros e visitas a museus e galerias. Faz parte da Associação de Artesãos de Macaé e da Associção de Artistas Plásticos de Macaé. Participou de várias exposições coletivas e individuais, tendo obras em vários estados do Brasil e no exterior.
