KRAFTWERK I (2016) Printmaking by Alexander Todorov

Alexander Todorov is a contemporary Bulgarian artist based in France, born nine years before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Growing up under a communist regime, he was surrounded by industrial landscapes and political propaganda, influences that deeply shaped his artistic vision. Todorov specializes in high-relief techniques like linocut and woodcut, drawn to the medium's historical connection to political propaganda. He is particularly fascinated by the absorption capacity of black and the creation of signs and symbols through his work.

His art explores the "visible invisible," focusing on themes of post-industrial society, alienation, and existential uncertainty. He often depicts symbols of the past, such as female mannequins set against abandoned industrial buildings, representing a disillusioned humanity trapped in a cycle of meaningless consumption and decay. His works evoke a sense of desolation, portraying humans as both objects and subjects—worn out, rejected, and stripped of purpose.

Todorov critiques the estrangement from nature, inherited anxieties, and the confusion of a society in transition. His art serves as a commentary on power, administration, and utilitarianism, capturing the struggle between reason and the unconscious spirit. Through his pursuit of these "unconscious particles," Todorov seeks to ignite the flame of creativity, where reason becomes merely a witness to deeper truths.
