Original Artwork refers to any work that is considered authentic and not a copy or imitation of the original works of an artist. Original artwork can be any type of painting, sculpture, performance, or other media. There are many types of original media. Mixed media includes oil, acrylic, and watercolor paintings. For workshop paintings that bear evidence of master craftsmanship, this attribution must be further qualified. Mercier’s lost study for Handel. In 1723 Handel moved to a newly-built house at 25, Brook Street, Mayfair, London, that was to be his home until his death in 1759. Philip Mercier (168-1760) painted him about 1730, the portrait still in private hands and generally badly reproduced. It is an iconic one, the only depiction of Handel at work. He pauses for thought, a quill in one hand and manuscript score before him, as he rests an elbow on a harpsichord, thought to be by William Smith and now in the Bate Collection (Oxford University).Mercier had trained in Berlin and travelled in Italy and France before arriving in London 1716. He lived on Leicester Fields (Square), married an English wife and became quasi-court artist to Frederick, Prince of Wales, whose establishment was on the north side of the square. In his portraits, Mercier brought a rococo informality, naturalness and richness of colour. He frequently painted musical subjects and domestic interior scenes and clearly responded to leading composer, Handel. He left London under a cloud in 1740 and spent a decade painting portraits in Yorkshire.
