"She almost could be a star, ascending to the heavens with her great feats of physical strength and perfected gracefulness. Maybe in this moment she feels, like a star, on top of the world, but one glance to the left and we can see, hiding behind the curtain, a foreboding, black figure standing calmly and watchfully to the side of all the action. This is the young dancer's patron. His is the world of violent brushstrokes and threatening forms, as seen in the stylistic upper-left-hand section of the painting. The stage curtains are painted frenziedly, and that whole side of the painting seems to be inching toward the sanctity of the star's glowing brilliance. The lines bear down over her and seek to engulf her. This is the reality behind this radiant performer. Soon her act will be done, and she will have to go back to her controlling male patron. She is most likely, in reality, a prostitute - his prostitute (this was the reality of the ballerina business during the late 1800s). Her life is probably actually quite far from being so bright off the stage, but here, for this brief moment of time she can break free from all of that in a dance that will elevate her to stardom. So she closes her eyes and dances away in happiness; but it is all farce, for a haunting and inescapable reality awaits just behind the curtain. For late 19th century female performers, this was the unfortunate reality,..."

Gouache

The substances are diluted with water and rendered pasty and opaque by the addition of gum and honey. The colors become opaque and can, therefore, be superimposed, which makes one paint with gouache as with oil. The gouache is recommended by its bright, fresh and delicate tones.

Ink

A strongly tinted liquid or paste that is used to mark paper or other printable materials. The design is done manually with a slab, feather, brush, or straightener.

Watercolor

Watercolor is a painting in which gum arabic binds transparent pigments revealing the support of the painting. The gouache, of identical composition, is opaque. A watercolor is a water-based painting on paper. We rarely speak of a painting for a work painted in watercolor. Watercolor paintings are considered to be a unique way to creatively represent dreams, illusions, emotions and luminous feelings using water soluble pigments. However, painting with watercolors can be difficult. It's a difficult medium to master, in large part because it can be ruthless and unpredictable. Mistakes are difficult to correct and its fluid nature makes it difficult to control. Yet it is these very qualities that give the medium its undeniable charm.

Andrew Walaszek was born in 1954 in Washington, DC, USA, and he is a contemporary artist currently living and painting in Northwest Arkansas, USA. He moved to Europe with his parents[...]

Andrew Walaszek was born in 1954 in Washington, DC, USA, and he is a contemporary artist currently living and painting in Northwest Arkansas, USA.

He moved to Europe with his parents in 1957, where he then lived in various countries for two decades. He began painting while living and studying in the following European cities: Warsaw in Poland, then called the Polish People's Republic, Glasgow in Scotland part of the United Kingdom, Belgrade in Serbia, then part of Yugoslavia, and Minsk in Belarus, then part of the Soviet Union.

In 1977 he moved back to the USA, where he lived in Chicago. For many years he created art in his spare time while developing commercial software at SPSS and then IBM.

Since 2014 he has painted full-time at his studio at Lake Avalon in Arkansas, USA.

He is a Modern and Contemporary artist, painting in figurative, abstract, free-form, emotionally intense, gestural, and expressive styles. Following his artistic training and constantly experimenting and self-discovering, he creates art inspired by historical and current events, his imagination, the new technology he loves, and the beauty of nature, especially the Arkansas Ozarks.
