From 20 April until 4 May Andrei Overweel's exhibition "Exits and Entrances" will be showcased at Salisbury House Gallery in Dunedin, being only the 3rd show at 5 Smith Street.
Overweel is a Wellington-based artist. However, apart from having strong family ties with Dunedin, this is where he also attended Art School in the mid ‘90s. Since then Overweel has successfully exhibited his artwork both in New Zealand and internationally.
The artist is renowned for his portraiture, which is original, detailed and decorative in style. One such example is the introduction of gold leaf into his portraits in 2005, adding to an ethereal and timeless quality of the work.
Overweel's latest works, which will be on display, were inspired by his ongoing interest in Greek, Egyptian and Japanese mythologies and by theatrical works from a similar period. Overweel paints largely in an allegorical manner, deliberately intending pensive overtones that go beyond the subject represented.
