This gilded bronze statue was created at the end of the 2nd century AD and is the only equestrian sculpture that has survived from ancient times.
The gilded bronze statue of Marcus Aurelius (Italian: Statua equestre di Marco Aurelio) was created at the end of the 2nd century AD and is the only equestrian sculpture that has survived from ancient times. Emperor Marcus Aurelius is depicted wearing a soldier's cloak over a tunic. Under the raised hoof of the horse, there used to be a figure of a bound barbarian, symbolizing a defeated enemy, and the gesture of the emperor meant generosity towards the vanquished. The statue is only twice the life size.
Description
The equestrian monument is a monument to the commander. The rider's gesture is addressed to the army. Marcus Aurelius really had to fight a lot in his lifetime with the Parthians, barbarian tribes, but descendants remember him not as a commander, but as a philosopher on the throne. The emperor managed to repel the attacks of enemies and pacify the rebels, but he did not value military glory highly.
Marcus Aurelius was one of the most educated people of his time. He devoted all his free time from state concerns to the study of philosophy. We have a book of his thoughts. In it we read: “Look, do not be caesarized, do not be soaked in porphyry - it happens. Keep yourself simple, worthy, uncorrupted, strict, upright, a friend of justice, pious, benevolent, affable, strong for every proper work. Enter the struggle to remain the way the teaching you have accepted wants you to be. Honor the gods, save the people. Life is short; one fruit of earthly existence is a righteous mental warehouse and deeds for the common good.
Marcus Aurelius was born in 121. In 138 he was adopted by Antoninus Pius, from whom he inherited power in 161. The co-ruler of Marcus Aurelius was Lucius Ver, who died in 169. Marcus Aurelius died during a military campaign in 180.
After 13 centuries, this monument served as a model for the sculptors of the Renaissance. When Donatello created an equestrian monument to the condottiere Gattamelata for Padua, he recalled Marcus Aurelius, seen in Rome. And after Donatello, sculptors will turn to this monument for another five centuries.

My name is Anastasia Yurzinova, I was born in 1994, I live and work in Russia, Moscow region. I received a higher art education at the university (Faculty of Fine Arts and Folk Crafts, Department of Graphic Design). During my studies, in addition to mastering graphic programs on the computer, much attention was paid to manual work: sketches from life and academic knowledge of drawing, composition and color science, landscapes of Russian everyday life, creating sculptures, engravings.
An equally important stage in the formation of my artistic taste and style was the period of drawing illustrations in Photoshop and creating corporate styles for companies. I worked as an Art Director in a Moscow company, headed the design department, then led freelance projects.
I loved to draw on the asphalt since childhood, I painted all the album sheets and coloring books, took first places in competitions in kindergarten, school, then went to art school. Constant artistic activity in my life led me to the path of an artist. Later, I wanted to bring history into my works, and history, atmosphere into my works, and I gave preference to "living" art - painting. It can give freedom and amaze with luxury. My working method combines the approaches of an artist and a designer, almost every picture begins with a mood board and a sketch. On canvases I work with oil, a palette knife, a sponge, and I create three-dimensional panels or wall sculptures with building materials in various techniques.
In my paintings, I depict different images that are not dedicated to one idea, but are familiar to every person. Through the prism of ancient images and traceless art - I reflect on how reasoning about deep themes of personality and cultural memory are resurrected in the thoughts of ordinary people and revive traditions. In other images, with the help of creativity, I set an inspiring impulse for rethinking the relationship "man - nature", "man - man". And volumetric panels in the style of minimalism help to be closer to nature and understand what happiness is measured in, what is the healing of the world and other global issues that everyone has ever thought about.
My works find their homes not only in Russia, but also in France, the USA, Hong Kong.
