Contemporary artist known for his abstract subjects combined with realism and innovative approach to the use of light and space. Alex combines traditional artistic techniques with modern technologies, making his works bright representatives of neo-expressionism. Born in 1958 in Cologne, Germany.
Alex Frem was born into a family of architects, which had a significant influence on his creative development. His parents often took him to exhibitions of contemporary art and architecture, where he began to be interested in form, structure and space from an early age. As a child, Alex was interested in designing and drawing, often spending time in his father's workshop, creating his first abstract sketches.
As a teenager, Alex actively participated in art competitions, and his school teachers noted his unusual approach to composition. In 1991, he entered the Berlin University of the Arts (Universität der Künste), where he studied painting and installation art. Influenced by his teachers, including the famous German artist Wolfgang Lehmann, Alex began experimenting with textures and colours, which became a characteristic feature of his work.
After graduating from university in 1996, Alex Frem moved to London, where he worked for some time in graphic design and visual effects for film, which influenced his perception of light and movement in art. However, the desire to devote himself entirely to painting led him to participate in group exhibitions. His first major exhibition was held in 1999 at the Whitechapel Gallery in London. Alex Frem's works, combining abstraction and realism, were praised by critics for their fresh take on the interaction of art and space.
In the early 2000s, Alex Frem finally returned to painting and moved to Berlin, where he rented an old industrial warehouse, which he converted into his studio. It was here that he created a series of works that became his calling card - "Fracture of Light", in which he explored the interaction of light and colour through the use of paint and glass.
Frem’s work is influenced by both classical modernism and modern technology. He is inspired by abstract artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Mark Rothko, but also uses light installations and digital technology to create new forms of visual interaction. Wittenberg often describes his work as a “dialogue between light and space,” where he aims to evoke emotions in the viewer through interaction with the environment. Despite his active international career, Alex leads a rather private life. He lives and works in Berlin, preferring to spend time in his studio, experimenting with new techniques. His work can be seen in exhibitions and private collections around the world. Frem also teaches contemporary art at master classes, where he shares his experiences with young artists.
