Biography
Ai Weiwei, born in 1957, is a renowned Chinese artist and activist whose life and work are deeply intertwined with political activism. After facing hardship during his early years due to his father's persecution during the Anti-Rightist Movement, Ai pursued art, co-founding the avant-garde group "The Stars" before studying abroad in the United States, where he was influenced by the vibrant New York art scene. Returning to China in 1993, Ai became a central figure in Beijing's experimental art community, co-founding FAKE Design and engaging in provocative projects like the "Fuck Off" exhibition. His political activism, particularly through online platforms, led to significant confrontations with Chinese authorities, including arrests in 2009 and 2011, which were widely condemned as retaliatory actions for his criticism of the government. Despite ongoing surveillance and restrictions, Ai Weiwei has continued his activism and artistic work from abroad, residing in Portugal as of 2023, and remains a prominent voice in global socio-political discourse.
