The Plague Doctor's Journey
In my latest piece, "The Plague Doctor's Journey," I aimed to capture a surreal landscape filled with symbolism that prompts reflection on the human condition and the passage of time.
In the foreground, I placed a figure dressed as a plague doctor, wearing the characteristic long-beaked mask. This symbolizes the fear of the unknown and the attempt to protect against an invisible threat. The flower on the doctor's hat, delicate and contrasting with his dark appearance, represents hope and the fragility of life in the face of death and destruction.
In the background, a gigantic bird's head looms, its melancholic gaze suggesting wisdom and observation, as well as alluding to mythological symbols of birds as guides for souls. The bird in flight, soaring above the doctor's head, symbolizes freedom and transcendence, pointing to a possible path of escape or salvation.
The floating island with ruins suspended over the water depicts the fall of civilization and the fragility of human achievements. These ruins symbolize both past and future destructions, reminding us of the impermanence of our creations.
The desolate landscape, with rusted vehicles, skeletons, and abandoned buildings, introduces us to a post-apocalyptic world where nature begins to reclaim its place and the traces of human activity slowly fade away.
The path winding through the scene, threading between elements of destruction, symbolizes the journey and search – both literal and spiritual – that each of us must undertake. It is a reminder that even in the most challenging times, there is a way forward, no matter how difficult and full of obstacles.
"The Plague Doctor's Journey" is a piece that not only captivates visually but also compels us to reflect on our existence, history, and future.
