Hanoi's Abstract Paintings Gallery is an unusual place. While modern Vietnamese painting is undoubtedly developing at a rapid pace, many galleries still exhibit the same old style of artwork, designed to appeal to tourists and traditionalists.
The Abstract Paintings Gallery distinguishes itself in two ways: It exhibits the work of only Abstract painting from Abstract Artists like Vu Hoa, Tran Hong Duc, Vu Hoang, Tran Dinh, etc. Two: the paintings shown here are in the abstract style, a far cry from the clichéd landscapes and women in ao dai so often seen in other Vietnamese galleries in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. These Artists in Abstract Paintings Gallery have witnessed the rapid changes that have taken place in Vietnam over the past two decades. These changes have inspired their work, and are reflected in two of their recent main series, Hanoi Streets adn Urbanization.
What stands out on the first viewing of paintings in Abstract Paintings Gallery are the dynamic colors the Artists use, they bold reds, yellows, blues and blacks suggesting energy and renewal. There is a sense of immediacy in their works, which comes partly from the very physical changes that have inspired them. They use elements from both Hanoi's urban landscape and the surrounding countryside, places they visit often and photographs, later creating oil paintings (often diptychs and triptychs) from these images and their own memories.
Although it has been said that recent more paintings from Abstract Gallery have revealed a softening of the geometrical hard edges and sharp lines the Artists used in the past, one absolute constant in his work is its intricate texture. The use of impasto to create such texture adds depth and a sense of movement to the paintings, and the vitality and exuberance of the painters can be seen in the way it has been applied, with a carefully controlled energy. Critics have noted that works from Abstract Paintings Gallery have become more confident as the years have passed, and the Artists have shown more of a willingness to experiment, although all their paintings can still be called "Abstract". Being the country's top Artists, they manages to differentiate themselves from the contemporaries in a very appealing way.

Graduation in Vietnam
Graduated at the University of Fine Arts in Hanoi, this creator and teacher won of many 1st prizes, and also showed his talent in animation . Upon his arrival in France, HOA VU, a superb technical master, combines the ancient art of lacquer with a non-figurative expression of creative freedom. About Vietnamese Lacquer
1. History
Originally lacquer is a folk art. First used to decorate the tables and gilded statues and pagodas, the lacquer has found in craft usual common use (screens, chests, trays, vases, chess sets ...). The study of technology lacquer began in 1930 at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts Indochine . Now, students and artists were able to exploit and develop the lacquer to achieve their painting. For many years, this process of lacquer work was kept as a national secret.
2. The material
The product called "lacquer" is composed of a milky juice, extract the laker, a tree commonly especially in mountainous and mineral powders to create different colors. By adding a few natural products, the milk becomes resin.
Resins and colors
Resin raw, natural, brown, is taken directly from the laker. It constitutes the essential basis of color mixture and used as a varnish.
Resin fired, is obtained using a spatula iron. She was beaten in an iron skillet to produce a chemical reaction (oxidation) and then used as black.
Other colors are mainly mineral powders, some are unsuitable due to oxidation always possible resin. Dominant lines are warm color. Can also be used, gluing or dusting of gold leaf and silver beaten egg shells, powdered pearl, shells etc ...
Support
(in Vietnamese: voc) is manufactured by a few specialized craftsmen. It consists of a slab of wood covered with several layers of resin, mixed with sawdust and cotton. Support, and manufactured, must resist the various possible deformations (temperature, high humidity). After sanding, this support must provide a smooth perfect. It is always black, ready for painting.
3. Technique
What characterizes the art of lacquer, is the application of several layers of color, dried in the damp. Subsequently, with the sanding, it is possible to show different shapes and colors. At this level, that chance and improvisation play a role, giving unforeseen effects. The artist may continue to play these phenomena by creating as many as they wish. Thus, the lacquer is a vast field of research and creation.
Applying layers of color
It is necessary for layering. Complete drying of the previous layer (in humidity) is essential before proceeding with the implementation, after sanding, following layers.
Sanding
Using sandpaper, the layers are sanded dry or in tap water, preferably.
The inlay
Whites are obtained essentially by inlaid eggshell in creating a bright white. Can also use sheets of gold or silver as undercoats or last layer, to give the effect of high brightness in the painting.
Finishing
It is possible to give an extra shine by applying a layer of resin raw, like varnish, serving both to protect and give more depth to the painting. The chart can also be left in the rough or rubbed and smoothed with the palm of the hand the choice of the artist.
Today, each artist can use modern playing with the processes and traditional materials. Like all art, lacquer work does create and allows for spontaneity, always enthusiastic. Duc Hong Tran art is a dramatic abstraction of time and place that is deeply felt. Although he is an art astute witness to changing times. Duc is thoroughly aware of the continuing need for artists to represent these times. There are many aspects of Duc art that are clearly influenced by Western forms and styles, but at the very heart of his painting is the meditative Vietnamese spirit.
