The painting "City on the Water" vividly portrays a serene coastal cityscape bathed in the golden hues of a setting sun. This artwork, painted in oil on cardboard, immerses the viewer in a dreamlike atmosphere, where the tranquility of water meets the majesty of historic architecture. The glowing sun, positioned low on the horizon, dominates the composition, casting warm oranges, yellows, and soft pinks across the sky. Its reflection dances on the calm water, creating a shimmering path that leads the viewer's eye deep into the scene. The right side of the painting features a collection of elegant buildings, their facades adorned with intricate details and washed in warm, rosy tones. A prominent clock tower rises above the other structures, standing as a sentinel over the harbor. Its silhouette, illuminated by the golden light, evokes a sense of timelessness and cultural significance. The interplay of light and shadow on the buildings’ surfaces enhances their three-dimensionality, making them feel both monumental and intimate. In the foreground, a row of small boats and sailboats rests gently on the water. Their dark silhouettes contrast with the luminous reflections, anchoring the composition and adding a sense of peaceful stillness. In the distance, additional sailboats glide softly, their white sails catching the fading light. The water itself is a dynamic element, painted with vibrant blues, greens, and golds, mirroring the surrounding environment and emphasizing the city’s deep connection to its aquatic setting. The sky, alive with warm, fiery tones, transitions to softer shades near the horizon, where it meets the city’s silhouette. Birds soar freely above, their forms delicately rendered, adding movement and life to the otherwise tranquil scene.Through "City on the Water," the artist conveys a profound appreciation for the harmony between human creation and nature. The painting celebrates the beauty of cities built along waterways, highlighting their unique charm and the peaceful coexistence of architecture and the natural world. The warm, glowing light suggests a moment of reflection and introspection, urging the viewer to pause and savor the fleeting beauty of dusk. This work resonates as a tribute to the enduring allure of coastal cities, where history, culture, and nature intertwine seamlessly. The artist’s choice of rich colors and expressive brushstrokes invites the viewer to immerse themselves in the enchanting ambiance, evoking feelings of nostalgia, serenity, and wonder.

Yuriy Suprunchuk is a Ukrainian painter, born on April 11, 1961, in Zhytomyr, Ukraine. He received his formal art education at the Zheleznogorsk Art School (Russia), graduating in 1982, where he studied under V. Chukuev and E. Nikulin. In 2002, he became a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine.
His artistic journey began in early childhood, when a moment of watching his mother paint sparked a deep fascination with art. Suprunchuk recalls how, as a small child, he once stayed up all night painting after being inspired by the scene of his mother working on a composition.
He later studied at the Kharkiv State Pedagogical Institute, where he not only refined his technical skills but also acquired deep theoretical knowledge and art teaching methodology. Under the mentorship of distinguished professors, he developed a strong foundation in both classical and contemporary Ukrainian art traditions. As a student and later as an educator himself, he placed a high emphasis on nurturing the individual talent and expression of his pupils.
Yurii Suprunchuk’s creative style blends realism with elements of romanticism and fantasy, often inspired by Ukrainian folklore, landscapes, and national cultural identity. His compositions are notable for their philosophical undercurrents and metaphysical dimensions. In his works, one can often find abstracted objects, symbolic figures, and stylized interpretations of natural forms.
His paintings are characterized by rhythmic compositions, balanced use of light, and expressive color schemes. He often explores existential themes and the metaphysical presence of the human spirit.
Suprunchuk’s creative approach is introspective and emotional, yet rooted in structured form. His works frequently portray female figures, domestic still lifes, Ukrainian village landscapes, and cultural archetypes. The recurrence of motifs like trees, fish, vessels, and abstract elements imbues his paintings with layered meaning, often inviting the viewer to contemplate deeper symbolic narratives.
In addition to his artistic practice, Yurii Suprunchuk has taught for many years, inspiring a new generation of artists in Zhytomyr. His students and colleagues recognize him not only for his exceptional talent, but also for his philosophical depth and dedication to the craft.
Today, his works are held in private collections and exhibitions, continuing to speak through color, form, and inner vision — a testament to the enduring power of Ukrainian painting.
