Artist Statement
Pierre Auguste Renoir was quoted as saying "A thing of beauty needs no commentary". He was talking about viewing his paintings, but when I think of this quote, I routinely apply it to my sculptural forms. His statement resonates in my soul and fits perfectly with the mental and emotional standard that I set for myself. This standard is my primary goal as an artist.
I expect my work to have its own unique visual voice. I express my own sense of beauty in every endeavor I undertake. I believe people encounter enough ugly or hateful things in their daily lives so, I don't choose to add to it. I choose to actively lighten the negativity that surrounds us by providing a visually beautiful sculpture that evokes an emotional and positive impact.
I love the versatility of three dimensions as well as the earthy elements of clay. My works manipulate the positive and negative space, are routinely asymmetrical, with varied brushwork, lines, incising, scale, and surface textures to impact and give them life. I feel each piece should be interesting to the viewer from different angles, and distances. Stretching the boundaries of many preconceived ideas for what clay can and cannot do is another goal I try to achieve. I paint some of these pieces so that I can control the color and texture.
I deliberately choose to create one-of-a-kind, time-consuming pieces. This adds to their individuality, thoughtfulness, and impact. I make my creations with the utmost intent that they become pieces of art that I am proud to sign.
