The canvass shows two characters sitting at a table. They contemplate the single piece of an imaginary game, similar to a game of chess. Each of them has for vocation to evoke the welcome reserved for the creation in its extreme attitudes: the enthusiasm is represented here by a pilgrim of Emmaüs depicted by Caravaggio around 1601. Opposite, a humble Christian, folded up on him even : he does not try to confront to God.
The piece in the center represents the tower of Babel, the famous one painted by Pieter Bruegel the Older by 1563. This “monument” belongs to the most mythical and fantastic towers never created. Its importance equals man’s spirituality and his most crazy dreams!
A child attends the scene. Sat between both characters, the child evokes the biblical narrative: by a clumsy gesture, he knocks down his glass of water, so prefiguring the Flood.
This picture is the first one of a series of four.
Every painting quotes a major architectural work in the human creation since " our origins " until nowadays. This series proposes a reflection on eternal immoderation of the man in its relationship to the creation; besides, this spotless white of the tablecloth symbolizes the blank page in front of which stands all the human creation.
