This body of work was inspired by an altercation I had with a man in a bar called The Painted Lady on Ossington Ave. in Toronto. At first he was full of compliments, but when his affections weren't returned he became quite ugly. Another man I met, a gentleman had just asked me out to dinner but instead of basking in that, the inappropriate behavior of his employee enraged me. I pushed him before he could hit me. He threatened my life verbally. Long story short, a bar brawl ensued. I felt quite guilty about that act of violence as I prefer peaceful resolutions. The incident inspired me to create this series.

Biography
Simone Frank was born in Toronto, 1970. When she was three years old, her mother told her to draw the drapes. Her mother meant, of course, to close them. She did. After illustrating the decorative floral drapes, she was given an easel, brushes, a palette and oil paints as a gift. She remains, at heart, a painter.
She holds a BAA in Fashion Design – Ryerson University, a Dean’s list Diploma in Graphic Design – George Brown College and a writing certificate – Humber College and has exhibited in the GTA, the Caribbean and Tokyo. She was invited to exhibit her works of art in China. Her publishing history includes but is not limited to: “Aspects of Love,” Life as Human Magazine, August 2014 and Kiss, Triumph, Messenger, Litté Realité, Volume X. No 1, 1998, Sergio Villani.
For years her work has revolved around the notions of spirituality, racism, love, joy and harmony. Simone creates works that are inspiring and thought provoking in various mediums. She uses art as a vehicle to inform and to heal.

I lost the imagined love of my life, my passion and my drive.
Normal people, don’t hurt this much, I decided.
So I tried to join the masses.
How hilarious was that?

I moved into a condo in Mississauga. I worked at a shoe store in the mall
with a lovely bunch of ladies who were married or dating
and had no desire whatsoever to exhibit at the Guggenheim.
I shopped at the Gap. I drank instant coffee.
I watched daytime talk shows and night time dramas.
I rode the stationary bike in the condo gym
instead of the fold up bike Igor the angry bicycle salesman probably stole.

Usually there is a deep, philosophical reason for the combination of pieces that I include an exhibition. And in this case there is as well. Because it’s Black History Month, I’m doing it this way. It’s about colour harmony, colour combination. The use of colour on different materials. And portraits of people real and imagined who had something to say. Something to share. Something to tell you. There is something that your history is telling you here.
A young man about ten years old told me when he saw them that he’d never seen anything like that in his life. “Wow!” he said. How did you think of that?
Years ago, I realized that all the years I spent studying Art History as required credits in the Fashion Design degree and Graphic Design diploma I received/achieved had sunk so deep into my psyche that I now believed things I learned were original ideas. I think that had something to do with being barely awake during history class.
Why scheduled a lecture with still images at 8am in the comfortable seating of a theatre? Don't get me wrong. I loved the information. I brought a lovely coffee. I curled up in the dim lighting. I fell into a trance and I remembered it all differently than I had expected.

When I was in highschool, someone from the Covenant House spoke to an assembly of students at St. Martin's High School in Mistersauga, (often referred to as Mississauga), of the need for support for homeless youth in Toronto. It changed my perspective on a lot of things.

Enjoy these pages rendered in scratchboard and ink on paper.
The story begins as a young woman and her granddaughter discuss the fate of the world while baking together. It is a work in progress, to be published at a later date. The piece speaks of family, cultural issues, love, hope and equity.

Granny was the strong silent type. What I loved about her was that she listened to me. I mean, really listened. As a child, I was filled with questions and and ideas. I drove a lot of adults crazy. But Granny always listened intently and I loved her for that.
This series is about a conversation a young woman has with her Granny about living in a chaotic world. This young lady struggles with the problems in the world and is desperate for a way to live happily despite wars, floods and fires.
I hope you enjoy the story.

Black History Month
A lot of us have been working very hard for years. Fighting tiny battles to clear the way. It’s so incredibly exhausting and so incredibly necessary.

Black History month, Canadians often remark is the shortest, coldest month of the year. In England, Black History month is in October, the beginning of the school
year. I thought for years February was chosen in North America because of Marin Luther King’s birthday, but he was born on January 15, 1929. You re-learn something new every day.

Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950) chose the second week of February to celebrate Negro History Week because that week included the birthdays of two important men: President Abraham Lincoln(February 12) and Frederick Douglass (February 14). When Negro History Week turned into Black History Month in 1976, the celebrations during the second week of February expanded to the entire month of February.

Origins of Black History Month
The origins of Black History Month can be traced back to a man named Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950). Woodson, the son of former slaves, was an amazing man in his own right. Since his family was too poor to send him to school as a child, he taught himself the basics of a school education. At age 20, Woodson was finally able to attend high school, which he completed in just two years.
He then went on to earn a bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Chicago. In 1912, Woodson became only the second African American to earn a doctorate from Harvard University (W.E.B. Du Bois was the first). Woodson used his hard-earned education to teach. He taught both in public schools and at Howard University.
Three years after earning his doctorate, Woodson made a trip that had a great impact on him. In 1915, he traveled to Chicago to participate in a three-week celebration of the 50th anniversary of the end of slavery. The excitement and enthusiasm generated by the events inspired Woodson to continue the study of black history year-round. Before leaving Chicago, Woodson and four others created the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH) on September 9, 1915. The following year, the ASNLH began publication of the Journal of Negro History.
Woodson realized that most textbooks at the time ignored the history and achievements of blacks. Thus, in addition to the journal, he wanted to find a way to encourage interest and study of black history. In 1926, Woodson promoted the idea of a "Negro History Week," which was to be held during the second week of February. The idea caught on quickly and Negro History Week was soon celebrated around the United States. With a high demand for study materials, the ASNLH began to produce pictures, posters, and lesson plans to help teachers bring Negro History Week into schools. In 1937, the ASNLH also began producing the Negro History Bulletin, which focused on an annual theme for Negro History Week.
In 1976, the 50th anniversary of the beginning of Negro History Week and the bicentennial of the United States' independence, lack History Week was expanded to Black History Month. Ever since then, Black History Month has been celebrated in February around the country.

My Wish for you in 2015
2014 is almost over.
At this time of year I like to be still. I like to plan, strategize, create, imagine. I sit down with a calendar of the year to come and get to work. I review the year that passed and consider what I have learned from all the bumps I encountered along the road.
What did you learn in 2014?
I learned:
Dreaming in secret is an intense and rewarding tool
To tell people that I love them often so that they always know
To, like Einstein, take one nap a day because I deserve it
To be good to myself so that I can be good to others
To exercise daily so that I am limber, clear thinking and energized
To thank the heavens for all the great things I have now because more is coming
To sit in nature and rest and to be thankful that there is green space in the GTA
To make the most of every moment

At this time of year, many of us become introspective. We sit in quiet wonder. What will come next year? Will things improve? Will the job come? Will the love come? Will we travel? Become wealthy? Become alive?

I wish for you a year filled with dreams that come true. A year filled with great vibrations and great friendships. I hope that you envision your fabulous future so that you can recognize it when it appears. I hope that you are able to see the good in things and people and that you love yourself more than enough.

When I was at Ryerson, I took a Creative Writing elective. Of course I got an A. (So bashful). One comment from my professor that has stayed with me is this, "No one wants to read about your pain."
In my twenties, regrets poured out of my pen on to the paper. It took little effort to write poetry about loss and sorrow, despair. With meditative effort, I create works around joy, love and peace more often. I do this in an effort to leave aspects of joy and love behind.
I am fortunate to have been hopelessly in love several times in my life. The endings have given me the inspiration to write a lot about it. My guys have asked to remain nameless despite my having no regrets over the beginning, middle or end of my time with them. I have been so inspired, so rewarded, so deeply cared for. Romantic love has given me my wings in many respects. Thank you, great loves of my life! You know who you are.
Perhaps we can make a pact to celebrate the great aspects of our love lives in November. Let's do that. Let's make this month the month where we all focus on the greatest loves of our lives. On our joys and blessing. On what's great about us. On we hope to receive and give romantically.

A Tribute to Ella and Stevie is now on exhibit in the lobby of Rainbow Cinemas Market Square in St. Lawrence Market, Toronto. The exhibition will hang for the entire month of October, 2014.

Perhaps it's time to treat yourself to a matinee and a day off. Rainbow Theatres always has a great selection. The film that most intrigues me is A Walk Among the Tombstones. It stars, Mr. Liam Neeson. He is one of my favourites.
I remember in my twenties one of my older friends told me that he was the most attractive actor in Hollywood. I disagreed.
"He's so rugged looking," I said.
She turned to the older guests, back to me and said, "When you're older, you'll understand." I always hated hearing that, but most of the time whoever said it was right.
Now, I see every Liam Neeson film that I hear about. He holds my attention for an entire film for many reasons.
