I digitally sculpted the torso in zBrush, digitally sliced the form to laser cut in wood, then assembled and painted the figure.
There are countless depictions of the female figure, in every medium imaginable. Artists never tire of creating yet another variation of the human form. I see the human form through the eyes of an artist and anatomist.

I am a biologist, physician, and artist whose passions have been inspired by the beauty and complexity of the natural world. Focusing upon patterns in nature and the anatomical complexity of the living organisms, I create sculpture, drawings, photography and designs in many media.
An observation elicits an emotional reaction, which evokes a desire to capture and preserve that experience as an instantiation, whether it be in wood, ceramic, metal, on paper or even in words.
I received an M.D. degree from Harvard, and a Ph.D. in Animal Behavior from Cornell University. Perhaps unexpectedly, I have devoted a portion of my career to studying honey bee behavior and mathematical patterns in nature. Currently, my work is divided among my family, the care of patients, photography, drawing, sculpture, woodturning and observing the natural world. I have traveled to places such as Nigeria, Guatemala and Bolivia to provide volunteer surgical care, and to Brazil, coral reefs and mountain tops to observe the world’s living organisms and geology. I have written two nature books (The Naturalist's Year and Velvet Mites and Silken Webs) and co-authored a more technical book, Self-Organization in Biological Systems.
As a sculptor trained in the field of medicine, my artistic journey is deeply rooted in my passion for anatomy and form. With a unique perspective shaped by my medical background, I embark on a creative exploration that goes beyond the surface, delving into the complexities of the human body.
Drawing inspiration from my knowledge of anatomy, I approach each sculpture with a meticulous eye for detail. I strive to capture the essence of the human form in its most authentic and accurate representation. My sculptures become a testament to the beauty and intricacy of the human body, revealing the hidden wonders that lie beneath the skin.
Motion, a fundamental aspect of human existence, is a recurring theme in my work. Informed by my understanding of the body's musculoskeletal system, I seek to freeze moments of movement in time, capturing the dynamic energy that courses through our bodies. Whether it's a dancer mid-leap or an athlete in the midst of action, each sculpture embodies the grace, power, and fluidity of human motion.
Through my exploration of anatomy and form, I aim to celebrate the remarkable complexity of the human body and inspire a deeper appreciation for the wonders of our existence.
