What if essential oils could be translated into the language of painting? That’s the question behind Aroma Codes — a meditative art project where each work channels the energy, form, and emotional message of a single essential oil.
This painting is dedicated to palmarosa — a grass with a delicate fragrance reminiscent of rose. Not quite as refined, but fresh, playful, and full of living rhythm. I wanted to capture that very essence — tender, resilient, and natural.
One of the key features of this artwork is the presence of intentionally created crackle textures. The background was painted in a fluid-art technique: I first laid down a rich, rose-pink base — dense and vivid — and then layered fluid paint over it. The work was done outdoors in the tropical heat of Bali. Although the materials were of excellent quality, the top layer began to crack as it dried — the intense heat caused the surface to cure faster than the inner layer.
I knew this would happen — and I welcomed it. While the cracks were still forming, I gently shaped them with my fingers. It was a deeply tactile, meditative experience. The resulting crackles became an intentional and mesmerizing element of the painting.
Viewers at the Aroma Codes exhibition were especially drawn to this piece. They would come close, examine the textures, and stay with it longer than most. These crackles have their own quiet magic — like nature leaving its signature.
Over this living, breathing surface, I painted the palmarosa flower — upright, rooted, graceful. This piece is about resilience that grows from softness. It’s both delicate and bright, just like the scent of this incredible plant.
