Sahar Hasan Al-louthai

سحر اللوذعي

Sahar Hasan is a Yemeni American artist known as the Yemeni art ambassador to the west. She resides in New York since the war started in Yemen in 2015.

Despite all the obstacles, she was able to continue her career as an artist and study MFA (master in fine arts) in Brooklyn college, NY.

She is the first Yemeni artist to receive a certificate from New York state for her achievements in the field of arts in 2021.

She established an artistic platform to support Yemeni artists who cannot travel to show their works under the principle of "Your Art is Your Passport". She launched this project by opening the first Yemeni art exhibition in New York in December 2021 in which she was honored a certificate from the assemblywoman Nathalia Fernandez.

Sahar has been involved in art since an early age. She taught art, coordinated art exhibitions and evaluated art works for two art competitions in Yemen. She opened 3 solo shows and participated in over 50 group shows in USA, Yemen, Dubai, Egypt, Turkey, Italy and Algeria as well as many virtual galleries.

Sahar has won some art competitions such as “ The Ultimate Cultural Art Competition”, Sana’a University 2008 and 2009. Talents’ sea art competition”, Yemen 2012, “ People’s Choice Award” New York- 440 gallery, 2015, “ Jury Choice Award” NY- BWAC gallery 2017, and “Special Merit Award”, 2020 , “ Light Space & Time online gallery”.

Plus, She was chosen as one of the best Arab artistic personalities by “Gül Rengi art association”, Turkey for the year 2021.

She masters different mediums and techniques, but she often uses oil paints with some additions of acrylic paints, stained glasses as a reference to “ Qamaria, the windows of the moon”, and ancient fabrics. Most of her works show a harmonious combination of both realism and abstraction. Her preferred subject matters are mostly horses and portraits of people wearing traditional fabrics using her art to narrate their interesting stories and getting their voices heard as well as presenting the aesthetic aspects of Yemen.

Sahar added an interaction of both texts and traditional patterns, combining her love for both drawing and handwriting and striving to manifest the knowledge and beauty of the Arabic calligraphy, Yemen architecture and ancient cultures. This energetic application of a combination of colors, patterns and letters ties it all together presenting the story behind the painting as well as keeping a sense of vagueness to be interpreted by the viewer’s imagination.

Sahar’s ultimate dream is to be able to spread more love and beauty through her art and to be an inspiration to the artists who are suffering the cruelty of wars. She believes art is the first step to freedom and self empowerment specially for women.
