This course offers an in-depth, hands-on look at the materials, techniques, and thinking of seven New York School artists, including Willem de Kooning, Yayoi Kusama, Agnes Martin, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, Ad Reinhardt, and Mark Rothko.
This is original artwork (created by me /Retne/ Arvydas Gaiciunas) clearly inspired by the materials and techniques used by the New York School artists explored in this course.
To experiment with gestural painting (in 1952, art critic Harold Rosenberg coined the term, “Action Painting”), I decided to do this work on a large format unstretched canvas - 160x145 centimeters.
Since I have already done several works in the learning process, inspired by the materials and techniques of Jackson Pollock, and I really liked it, I decided to make the basis of the picture, its background, using the Alkyd Enamel Paints entire surface of the canvas. Spreading paints from the center of the canvas in four directions to each of edge I used two complementary colors - bluish cyan and yellow-brown.
In the central part of the canvas, I began to paint with oil add linseed oil, as well dammar varnish and solvent. I could not come to a result that would suit me. I scraped off the paints and applied it again.
Then I decided to continue the work with enamel paints. At first, I worked wet-in-wet, then wet-overdry. Enamel paints dry completely in 24 hours, so I took a break for a day several times to continue painting on the dried layers.
With brushes, I applied enamel paint (instead of oil) on canvas, using the technique of de Kooning, which I learned in the process of studying the third week of the course.
Of course, enamel paints behave on the canvas in a completely different way than the oil. In some places, I used a palette knife to scrape off the paint. I even needed a rough dishwashing brush.
When the layer was dry, I dripped the enamels over the top again with the Jackson Polock method, using rice sticks and brushes that had fallen into disrepair.
In the 5th week, of course, I prepared three black oil paints to use in the Ad Reinhardt studio exercise. In two weeks these three black paints, with different shades, were ready, but I did not have time to put them into practice. So I thought that I could use them in my work on this painting.
First, one black square was painted using all three shades. Then, after a few days, I made another black square, slightly tilting it, in order to make Yayoi Kusama's looping marks on the top of it for a lesson that just coincided with this work.
Two black, horizontal lines were made using masking tape, as explained in the Barnett Newman video tutorial.
And three transparent rectangles, two white and one pink, on the left side complete the painting.
The painting will be taken off its stretchers, rolled, and shipped in a heavy-duty mailing tube between 8” and 12” diameter.
