Uma forma de arte, principalmente pintura, que foi influenciada pelo espiritualismo é chamada de arte espiritualista, arte espiritual, arte mediúnica ou pintura psíquica. A arte espiritual teve uma influência significativa no modernismo e, como resultado, na arte hoje.

Georgiana Houghton e Piet Mondrian são dois artistas espirituais bem conhecidos. Diferentes tipos de arte espiritual

Embora muitos artistas tenham sido influenciados pelo espiritismo, muito poucos criaram o que os espíritas chamam de "arte espiritual". O que constitui exatamente a "arte espiritual" pode ser categorizado em três categorias principais: obras de arte "precipitadas"; retratos de espíritos pintados pelas mãos dos médiuns durante as sessões; e criações de médiuns que afirmam ter as mãos guiadas por espíritos.

Os médiuns afirmam que no primeiro caso de "precipitação", os espíritos não usaram um artista humano para conduzir suas mãos; em vez disso, eles mesmos criaram as pinturas. Em um segundo exemplo de arte espiritual, retratos de espíritos, era muito popular para os médiuns esboçar retratos dos espíritos que eles diziam estar presentes nas sessões durante o auge do Espiritismo. "Auragraphs", que descrevem a história, presente e futuro de uma pessoa como visto por um médium ou clarividente, estão próximos do segundo tipo de "arte espiritual".

Segundo os espíritas, o terceiro tipo de "arte espírita" consiste em obras de arquitetura, escultura e pintura produzidas por espíritos dirigidos pelas mãos do artista. No segundo grupo (retratos de espíritos), diz-se que os espíritos freqüentemente também dirigem as mãos do médium, mas na terceira categoria, várias obras de arte são criadas em vez de retratos dos próprios espíritos.

Obras de arte “precipitadas”

David Duguid (1832-1907) foi o primeiro médium conhecido capaz de "precipitar" pinturas espirituais. Embora Duguid frequentemente pintasse com a ajuda de pintores espirituais, durante suas sessões seus guias também criavam pinturas "diretas" (precipitadas).

Os irmãos Campbell, que residiam na comunidade espiritualista de Lily Dale, Nova York, foram talvez dos primeiros médiuns a se especializar em pinturas precipitadas. Apesar de não serem irmãos, Allen Campbell (1833–1919) e Charles Shourds (1863–1926) compartilhavam uma casa e realizavam sessões espíritas juntos. Os irmãos Campbell nunca colocaram as mãos na tela ao criar seus retratos mais conhecidos, que incluem os de Napoleão e Abraham Lincoln, que foram concluídos em público. Ainda hoje, turistas e moradores de Lily Dale afirmam ter tido encontros espirituais diante das obras-primas dos Campbells.

As irmãs Bangs, Elizabeth (1859–1920) e May Mary Elvira (1862–1917), eram igualmente conhecidas por seus retratos precipitados de pessoas falecidas. Embora fossem frequentemente expostos como fraudes, os irmãos Campbell e as irmãs Bangs eram fortemente protegidos por um segmento significativo da comunidade espiritualista americana.

A "Swami Laura Horos", também conhecida como Ann Odelia Diss Debar (1849–1911), que afirmava ser guiada pelos espíritos de vários antigos mestres europeus, também foi associada a pinturas espirituais. Victor Hugo (1802–1855) criou suas pinturas espirituais durante as sessões realizadas em sua residência em Jersey, Ilhas do Canal. Lá, Wella Percy (1833–1900) e Lizzie Pet Anderson (1839–1896; proeminente) foram parceiras na vida e no espiritualismo. Eles foram promovidos pela Gallery of Spirit Art, uma publicação com sede no Brooklyn que apresentava apenas obras de arte criadas com a ajuda dos espíritos.

Retratos de espíritos que aparecem em sessões ainda fazem parte da cena espírita atual e, para indivíduos que pensam reconhecer seus entes queridos falecidos, podem ser uma experiência muito comovente. Frank Leah (1886-1972) e Coral Polge (1924-2001), dois artistas espirituais britânicos, foram reconhecidos internacionalmente nesta área.

Arte produzida por espíritos dirigindo as mãos do artista

Os espíritas brasileiros que praticam a pintura de transe frequentemente canalizam as obras de pintores e escultores conhecidos. José Medrado (n. 1961) é conhecido em todo o mundo por suas pinturas acrílicas de transe e por como é simples para ele produzir uma obra de arte com a ajuda de muitos assistentes espirituais. Em estado de transe, ele criou pinturas sob a influência de mestres da pintura como Renoir, Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Matisse, Gauguin, Cassatt, Da Vinci, Morisot, Manet. Também conhecido como Medrado no Brasil é Luiz Antônio Gasparetto (1949-2018), que pinta e esculpe com as mãos guiadas por Degas, Sandro Botticelli, Amedeo Modigliani e muitos outros artistas renomados.

Alguns exemplos de arquitetura espiritual também se enquadram nessa categoria. Por meio do uso de médiuns, Iulia Hasdeu (1869–1888) revelou os planos arquitetônicos de seu famoso "Castelo Hasdeu" em Câmpina e de seu túmulo em Bucareste. A vila italiana de Rosazza, perto de Biella, construída entre 1880 e 1899 para o senador italiano e maçom Federico Rosazza (1813–1899), é outro exemplo de arquitetura espiritual. Foi desenhado pelo pintor Giuseppe Maffei (1821-1901). Foi baseado em planos dados a ele pelos espíritos de Agostinho de Hipona (354–430), que nunca trabalhou como arquiteto em sua vida, e um homem não identificado de Volterra, Toscana.

Influência do Espiritismo na arte contemporânea

Houve um ressurgimento do interesse pela espiritualidade na indústria da arte nos últimos anos. A atenção póstuma está sendo dada nos museus a artistas falecidos que mergulharam extensivamente no misticismo e na religião.
