Wieland, the son of the sea giant Vadi, was apprenticed to the famous blacksmith Mime. After a while, Siegfried-Sigurd also became apprenticed to Mime.
Mime was a wild boy and there were often arguments among the apprentices, with Siegfried, as the stronger one, always getting the upper hand and beating up his two housemates.
At some point Wieland could take it no longer and looked for another apprenticeship with dwarves, who made him the most skilled of all blacksmiths.
Wieland managed to escape the dwarves who wanted to keep him and travel down the Weser in a dugout canoe. This is how he ended up in Jutland, in the kingdom of King Nidung.
He first worked for him as a cupbearer. He once washed three knives by the sea and lost one in the process. As a good blacksmith, it was easy for him to make a new knife.
When the king used this knife while eating, it not only cut through the food, but also through the plate and deep into the table. Nidung wanted to know who had forged such good steel and found out that it was Wieland.
The king's blacksmith, Ämilias, became jealous of Wieland and offered him a competition. Ämilias was to forge armor and Wieland a sword, and whose skill proved weaker would die.
Wieland then forged the sword Mimung and Ämilias forged a helmet. In the fight, Wieland killed Ämilias, through whose helmet the sword Mimung went "like butter".
After a falling out, Nidung had Wieland's legs paralyzed because he did not want to lose such a good blacksmith.
Wieland took revenge by killing the king's two sons and working their skulls into golden goblets for the king's table.
He also raped the king's daughter Badhilde, who then gave birth to Wittich, who later appears in the German heroic saga.
The lame Wieland freed himself by forging himself a feathered garment and using it to escape.
