We don't know much about Brueghel's life because there is no letter or document about his birth or family history. The biography of Carl von Manders, which came out in 1604, 35 years after Brueghel died, tells us everything we know. So, we still don't know much about his life.
It is thought that he was born near Breda between 1525 and 1530. (Netherlands). He went to art school in Antwerp and learned how to paint from the painters Pieter Van Aelst Coecke and Jerome Cock.
In 1553, he went to Italy, which was a must-see for Northern European painters. While there, he worked in the Rome studio of miniature painter Giulio Clovio. This trip didn't have any effect on his work, but his trip through the Alps gave him ideas for many drawings and paintings.
In 1563, he leaves the city of Antwerp and moves to Brussels. On September 5, 1569, he dies there. Until he died, he painted in this city. His children, Jan, Pieter, and Maria, all grew up there.
Brueghel started out as a copyist for Jérôme Bosch. Over time, he developed his own style, showing the lives of peasants and beggars, how simple their lives were, and the nature of their surroundings at the same time. His attention to detail makes it seem like you are looking at photos from this time.
