The subject is Mr. Pruitt’s flag. It was raised outside his small, wooden store. In 1925, Mr. Pruitt’s great grandfather opened the store. It stayed open and in the family until May of 2015. It was located on Green street in Beaufort, South Carolina. It served the neighborhood known as the Freedman Commons, where enslaved people built new homes and started businesses after the civil war. It was a prosperous part of the town. Mr. Pruitt was a nice man. He was patriotic man who never failed to Fly the American Flag. One early morning, I saw the sun hit his flag through the draped moss and big trees. It only would light up for a few minutes and only in the spring. That first year, I missed the shot. The following year, I waited, checking each April morning. My camera was ready to run outside with me. And finally, the sun crept through the branches and illuminated Mr. Pruitt’s flag. The wind had tangled it but somehow that was even more poignant. This image won a 2013 Award of Excellence from Communication Art’s Magazine. (For Photographers, that’s like getting an Oscar.) Mr. Pruitt proudly received a framed copy of the shot which hung in his store until it closed.

This is art for the tastemakers: the interior designers who sculpt sanctuaries, the collectors who seek soul in their walls. My work draws from a tradition of elegance—think the poised restraint of early pictorialism, kissed by modern clarity. Here, every piece is destined to elevate spaces and spark conversation or create a haven of loveliness. My art is for people like me—those who laugh at life’s messes and still crave beauty that lasts.

I hope my art inspires people to put more real Art in their homes rather than cheap decor from from Amazon, Walmart, or Temu. I hope it inspires more people to collect and invest in Fine Art. I hope they begin to start art collections for their grand children and giving Fine Art as wedding gifts, graduation gifts, and other meaningful milestones.

Because, as she says, "I find the stories of art collectors are intrinsically part of the pieces they collect. It is the artists that tell all our stories. That makes art into a creatively forged kinship between artist and collector. So, in all my work, I hope people see my work as a mirror of their own fineness and value. It's really yours. I made it for you."
